Should this bother me?

This summer I’ve been interning in NYC and living in my aunt’s unoccupied apartment. I let my best friend since middle school live with me for free, since he too is working in the city, and cannot afford a place here right now. Anyway, when we’re both relaxing, I tend to plug my computer into my projector, and we watch TV. He is generally the one that says he wants to watch TV, and usually specifically chooses what he wants to watch, which I’m generally fine with.

So I don’t know why this bothers me so much, but whenever we are watching TV, he ends up just being glued to his cell phone the entire episode. As in, barely looks up, and just surfs the web on his phone for at least 50% of the time. I know, I shouldn’t care about what he does, but it pisses me off because he is the one choosing what we watch, and its being played off of my laptop, so I can’t use my laptop for that time. I know he can’t possibly be paying attention while he’s on his phone, which then makes him not understand what’s going on later.

Am I crazy, or does this piss other people off to? Why watch something on TV if you’re just going to sit on your phone and not even pay attention?

I don't understand the dilemma... if you want to use your laptop then just take it and do so. If he complains tell his freeloading ass to fuck right off.

Its more along the line of the fact that I wait for him to watch the next episode of the series (ex. the Sopranos) since he works different hours than I do and we aren't home together often. Why should I wait if all hes gonna do is play with his phone like a teenage girl?

Lol. First you let him move in for free, now you're letting him order you around. Why don't you just bend over and drop your pants while you're at it.

Sounds like he has you trained well.

you're asking us how to talk to your friend of years and years

I would say "hey fucker, if you're not going to watch I'm changing the channel (or using my laptop)"

Id be more pissed he's not helping you with the rent, but apparently he can afford a monthly cell phone and (apparently) excessive data plan.

It would irritate me, but just because I know so many people who are like that. For some people their cell phone is like crack or something. Every text message must be answered immediately no matter what they happen to be doing. If they haven't got any text messages they're still constantly checking their phone to see if they got any text messages, despite the fact that they invariably have some annoying chime or sound bite set up to notify them of messages. I guess they need to make sure the phone didn't spontaneously turn itself off because it's so unimaginable that they might not receive a text for 2 minutes straight. I just don't get how people find cell phones to be so damn interesting. Good god I'm so glad that my life isn't interrupted every minute on the minute by something that demands my immediate response, yet other people seem to LIVE for that.

Hell, I broke my phone monday and haven't missed it a bit.

We're both college kids, and his parents pay his cell phone bill. He moved out of the house to be closer to his job in NYC, rather than paying $30 a day for a train ride. I'm not paying for the apartment either, since my family owns it.

I think more of the issue lies in the fact that since we both went to college, hes turned into a passive bitch that not only can't make a decision for himself, but refuses to make an opinion about anything - his answer to everything is "I don't care." I've also realized he is probably one of the dumbest people I've ever met, I have trouble having a conversation about anything important with him.

I'm sure thats not how he sounds based on my OP (it sounds more like I'm the bitch in the friendship, but I assure you thats not the case), but its hard to describe situations like this. Anyway, I'm really just venting. It's frustrating to see our friendship change so much after college and living together definitely hasn't helped.
