Well we're talking about the same people who thought putting giant panels on the sides of their fighters that quadruple their silhouette was a good idea.I know tie fighters follow the zergling philosophy, but come on.
I suppose the whole bridge thing could be psychological. And given the ridiculously short ranges they fight at the added visibility could be an advantage if sensors are damaged.
I remember vaguely the tie fighter wings act as some sort of collector panel.
