Should there be a mandatory Draft

What would you feel if the US military made the lottery Draft mandatory ALL the time even in peace time. High school grads selected would do like 3-5 yrs of military service while perhaps earning college credits/tuition. Something like this would obviously be good in keeping enrollment up.

no we do alright with an all volunteer force and get some good people in there. Start drafting and no telling what riff-raff you would have to train.

An army of conscripts is an army that sucks. No, lets keep the standing professional army.

Nah, we should just do what a lot of other countries do and just install a required 1-2 year service after you graduate high school. Forget a draft.

South Korea, Taiwan (ROC), Israel, and other countries have a mandatory term of service for all males.

I wouldn't mind seeing that in the US but nothing crazy. 2 years is enough to train you and give you a bit of experience.

However I'm not gonna put in any effort to see that it happens either.

You don't want me in the military. Geeks stumbling over themselves in basic training would be a national embarrassment. Leave it to the professionals.

<< not in our proverbial "free country". >>

Well, if they instituted it, you could see it as a responsibility...just like paying taxes or jury duty :)

No, we don't need a mandatory draft because nowadays military isn't as simple as just the quantity of soldiers. Perhaps in the olden days (ala The Patriot :)), when people would line up and directly across from each other and shoot, you need as many meat shields as you can get. But I think contemporary times depend more on the quailty of the soldiers than the quantity.

A professional soldier is much more effective than a draftee who can barely fire a gun.

I say no, just because I think there are a lot of people you just don't want in the military.

No, there are enough idiots in the military, hate to imagine how it would be with nonvolunteer idiots. BTW, I am in the military, and most military members are professional, however, as with any group, you do get those that are just a waste of living matter.

But if you trained them out of high school for a couple years (or even just a 10 week basic training), they'd be okay.

Ahhh yes....

<==--Army.

But if I could help it, I'd only want volunteers in my unit :)

Of course not.

And with all the whiney high school kids in this country, people would be screaming to high hell if they had to go to the military while all their friends went off to college to drink.

no, but I would strongly support basic training for all high school graduated...
maybe like a 6-8 week boot camp to teach people how to survive on their own, use rifles properly, defend's oneself and country, etc.

oh, and some discipline wouldn't hurt either

Instead of lottery Draft, i think everyone should serve or do something for the US after they graduate High School for just one year.

It would also be cool to meet Americans from different parts of the country.

I'm sure there aren't too many Californians who feel ties with Iowans and vice versa :)

Yes leave it to the professionals.

Ala earning your citizenships as in the movie StarShip Troopers? Usually high school graduates can't control their discretionary income (among other things) and helping the economy is plenty.

Now you know exactly how Drill Sergeants feel.

National service for all able bodied! A novel idea. Maybe not necessarily military service, but national service. Hey, if one admits they couldn't hack it in the USAF, then assign them to other meaningful tasks. EPA Superfund cleanup sites, trash collection along public highways, caring for the elderly and disabled. The list goes on and on and on!

Yeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!! Put me in charge of it................ PLEASE!

Run the program like the (West) Germans ran their respective program during the 70's and 80's. The "Kriegsverwiegerer" or conscienctious objectors were assigned "high profile" duties such as cleaning the residences of the elderly.

A mandatory service program might even cure some of the idiocy found in the 18-21 year olds of this country too.

Hey Parents: Is your 18-21 year old kid overweight? Does he/she/it wolf down too much food while scouring the web for non-productive nonsense? Look no further. ;)

The argument FOR reinstating the draft is to increase the quality of the individual soldier. You draft a lot more people than you need, and weed out the bottom 25%-50%.

I feel that there should not be a draft, but that the summer "vacation" between high school and college, everyone should undergo some sort of "universal military training" - 8-10 weeks of basic military duties and responsibilitys. It would be good for the "young'ens" IMO
