I don't know if Russia still does it but back in the Soviet days they would show off their military might every mayday. Should the U.S. do the same?

Who needs military parades when our government constantly finds excuses for launching actual missions? Drive a bunch of tanks in a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue or bomb the crap out of some third world nation... which is the more potent display?

The Air Force buzzes our stadium with jets during the beginning of football games, that count?

for what purpose?

by and large, Americans are fat and content. it's not like the government needs to suppress internal opposition.

No, wasting troop training time for parade preparation shows displays weakness, not strength.

I kind of thought we rather WERE showing off our military might every day, with rather lethal consequences.

Parades are old fashioned and outdated. American's are not famous for making quality products at low prices or great works of art. We're famous for Hollywood and marketing, for having a line of shit a mile long. TV commercials and things like Fox News are much cheaper and more effective.

I think it would be seen as a pompous and juvenile thing below the US. Yes, below the country that is, like, the 18th season of Survivor. It's even lower than that. Let the North Koreans do it so that their starving masses can see instead of muscle and health when they look in the mirror a 1970's tank driving down an otherwise-deserted street.

They still do that crap with the blue angels every year. Don't they have brown people to bomb instead of flying low over peoples houses creating sonic booms all day? Stupid militarism. The navy guys tip well at least.

I mean they do it here every year during fleet week. Trust me, I am by no means seeking them out, my ears are still ringing from living in a area with 5+ story buildings on hills with BOOM! BOOM! echoing off the building walls from the sonic booms this past year. (and EVERY year) You cannot even think during fleet week much less get any peace during the daytime.

Great for tourism, they are good looking machines. Terrible if you actually have to live under the racket.

My sister lives under the racket. Not just once a year, but all year long fighter planes practice over her house. I've seen the blue angels so many times I can't count them and now they bore me. The new F 22 raptor doing 90 degree turns is something to see though.

I lived right next to where SAC used to practice landings all night of the big strategic bombers as a kid for about a year.

They would just touch down the rear tires and slam the (omg like 12 of them on each wing!) jet engine throttle to get back up.

Right over my house.

The puny fighters engine on the angels are more annoying, I always hated whining over the huge roar like the end of the world as background noise.

I'm in the VA Tidewater area which is basically the largest navel base in the world. So many military personal that they have to change shifts at 2:00pm to prevent total gridlock on the freeway. I can drive in almost any direction to half a dozen bases to watch jets practice.

For once, we agree. True powers don't need to parade the military. Use it when needed, otherwise there's no need to show it.

Air shows are awesome, I grew up watching the Blue Angels perform for the Naval Academy graduation every year. I'm sorry that some of you have such a huge chip on your shoulder that you can't just sit back and enjoy things like that.

We don't need to have parades, we're already the top dog. The purpose of military parades is to intimidate other first world countries into not messing with you (e.g. Nazi's, Soviets, China, North Korea, etc).

In the Soviets' case they may well have been equally intended to impress dissident elements with the overwhelming power of the state and the futility of resistance.

The Soviet, now Russian drama is/was a prapaganda and political statement by a country/nation that feared and had experienced foriegn invasion. And buried large numbers of civilians and troops.
The Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day are the "parades" of the Pride of USA.
The carrier fleet is overwhelming beyond any "white fleet" exercise.
The American weapons are based on quality not quantity. Like anything else some is crap and some untouchable.
Americans ..

The US shows and uses its military "might" 24/7/365. Except that Afghanistan started to stink like it did for Soviets.
