I say let the courts decide what to do. If the courts say the individual in mentally incompetent, then that is the way it will have to be. Everyone is someone's relative or dad or mother or whatever.

In the mean time you have to realize that dimensia can come and go. It will not always seem aparrent at the time of a test. My dad has Parkinsons and it can really slow down his reaction time. However, after they started medicating him he seems ok. He use to talk really slow and appeared to have no emotion. After he took the medication it was like he was an entirely different person.

There are just too many things to look for.

I say make a mandatory examination every time their license comes up for renewel if they are over 55. The reason is they can develop conditions where their eyes get cloudy or any range of maladies that effect people of older age. Reaction Time and Eyesight should be verified.

The DMV should give people an asshole test that keeps the kinds of arrogant, judgmental but without judgment, assholes and pricks that populate this thread off the road. How many die each year from road rage as opposed to dementia, would you say?

No one seems to want to wait until the facts come out on this one. The dementia may not have been the reason he hit the pedestrian. The guy may have walked out into traffic. The dementia may have prevented the old guy from absorbing what had happened and the shock of the accident may have brought it on or made it much worse. Too early to judge this one.
