I have heard rumors that Russia might be interested in joining NATO. Putin is really trying to bring Russia back up to speed now that he's been elected. He's actively trying to get in the EU and even considering trying to join the WTO. Now they are willing to back us in this new conflict (even though it's not for free, we have to provide them infrastructure). It's a start.

Should they be allowed to join?

I don't see why not.

If we want to make true progress, the whole world will have to join together eventually.
I don't expect this to happen in my lifetime, but I think long term that should be the true goal.

Yeah. I think it would contribute to world stability. Russia still spends a whack of coin on its military and it would be nice to have as an ally.

I'm all for Russia joining. I just wish China was on our side too. I can just see China going at it with Russia. And with Russia as our ally, we would basically be looking at WWIII...

Perhaps it was, but it can evolve can't it?

If NATO acquired the Russians as allies, then it would have satisified it's purpose quite nicely.
Not by killing all the Russians, but by eliminating their threat factor.
IMO getting them as allies is a FAR FAR better way of eliminating the threat than killing them all.

Sure, let them join NATO. Just announced a big arms deal with Iran, WTH.

Now, if we could just get rid of the UN.

If Russia can support the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and abide by its bylaws and membership requirements, by all means. I just hope there is a clause that stipulates no member can wage war or aggression against another member. I believe there is such a clause.

China should also join a similar pact, however, I do not believe China exists in the North Atlantic. I believe there is an organization for pacific rim countries that is like the NATO. I just can't remember the name right now.

Someday, I hope we can be part of a Persian Gulf region alliance to protect and preserve peace for all human beings, regardless of race, relegion,or ethninticity in that area as well.

When I went to the University of Maryland I saw lots of hot Russian women there... a lot of them look just like American women except that they spoke Russian.

As much as I like the idea of Russia joining Nato, sadly I think it will never happen. One, Russia isnt ready to join anykind of Organisation until they stabilize their economy and begin to rebuild their nation into a superpower that could compete on an economical level with the EU,US or China. Two, Their are still communist hardliners in high state positions that hold enough influence to stop anykind of lean to western culture. Three, Nato allies still look at russia as a credible threat to their sovreignty. Maybe not so much as before, but in light of the former countries collapse, theyre loose nit security on nuclear, biological and chemical arms, the russians wouldnt be able to stand up to the stringent security measures and adhere to strict NATO alliance guidelines set out for them.(And you know theyd be strict given the former countries love for one another.)

Thats my .02 cents on the matter.

I disagree. Never is a long time. Just look 12 years back. Who would have thought that the Soviet Union would collapse? Now look to today. We get along reaitivly well with the Russians. They are no longer our biggest threat, or even really much of a threat at all. Who knows in another 10 years what will happen..?

I wonder how widespread this is. Even Putin, himself, is ex-KGB, and that seems about as hardline as you can get. Yet his efforts look very "westernized" to me.
