Should Public Colleges be Free?

Nothing should be free because in reality, nothing is free.

Somebody is going to pay for that school, no matter what you do.

They are already cheap compared to many private schools....and if they were free, everyone would go and it wouldnt be higher learning anymore

It should only be free if you are required to attend. Public schools (K-12) are "free" because they are supported by tax payer dollars, and children are required to attend (to a certain age). Primary and secondary education is a right. Higher education is a priviledge.

If it was free it would:
- Drain the budgets of state governments (education is technically a state affair)
- Degrade the quality of the education
- Dilute current applicant pools, so that it was even harder to find a good job
- Bankrupt McDonald's, because they'd have to pay college graduates more than $7 an hour

tutition cost at your local university is already a pretty hot deal. Why make it free? If you from a low income household, you already get plenty of grants & loans to pay for college. With the job you'll be getting after graduating, the loans can be easily paid off in a year or 2.

Nowadays it's pretty much expected for many jobs, so it's really not some elite privilege to go to college.
