Should Pope John Paul just give it up?

It seems as though he is ailing and constantly sick, always having to cancel events and has to have people finish his speeches. Can he just retire or does he have to man that post for life? Seems as though he would pass the buck to a more capable successor.

I believe the Pope is appointed for life by the college of cardinals, but I'm not sure.

He should have removed himself from power after the whole molestation issue finally received publicity.

His mind and objectivity gave up quite a while ago.......the Catholics are stuck with the result until the body decides to follow.

What analysts have been saying this??? The Pope normally stays in position until death. He hopes to declare Mother Theresa a Saint before he passes on. Speculation is he will do this for her next month.

To the best of my knowledge, there's no mechanism in the church that allows the pope to step down.

And Ronstang, what makes you say his mind is gone? He's been quite lucid as I understand things.

Actually, the Pope can step down, others have in the past. Also the Cardinals could replace him.

Niether is likely, the Pope will die, being the Pope. And he could live another 10 years, or he could die at any time.

And once he does die, you can expect a far more liberial Catholic Church.

Uggh you guys are the lame... I mean to quit that position would mean that the Pope would lose his divine powers :p

Even putting religion aside the man is an outstanding person! His mind is not quite as sharp as it used to be but for his physical condition and for an 83 year old Polack having kielbasa for breakfast lunch and dinner everyday he is far better than most.

As for a more liberal Catholic church, the Pope (Karol Joseph Wojtyla) is considered to be a very liberal Pope in comparison to who came before him. However, compared to today's standards I see how you can make that statement.

Some Pope background for anyone interested
