should polygamy be legal?

what kind of man in his right mind would want to have more than one wife at a time? double the nagging, double the chores, and the possibility of getting double teamed in an argument. I have just one and from time to time I try to figure out a way to legally yet cheaply to cut loose and can't seem to figure out how.

worth it if you are double-teamed on bed
 
LOL at the idea that rich people "deserve" more wives or "deserve" more of anything.

But otherwise I am not aware of many rational arguments for not allowing it among consenting adults. The practical reason we don't have it and probably will not have it legalized is that most free women would not choose it. Polygamy is mostly practiced in male-dominated societies where women have no freedom.

This is not a legal issue since no one wants it.

Similarly, marriage to a Donkey is not a legal issue because no one wants one.

Wealthy people can fill their mansions with all the lovers they want, have children with all the people they want, and even use prenuptial agreements to insure their spouses don't take them to the cleaners. The only things they are denied are any respectability and privileged the legal institution might confer. I can just imagine a hospital trying to arrange visiting hours for a harem of 80 wives.
 
polygamy should absolutely be made legal. as long as people can afford the families they create they should be allowed to do whatever they want. its none of the government's business to be making "moral" judgements about peoples lifestyles.

politicians starting wars and spending taxpayer money, now that is everyones business

lol i grew up well off and this is absolutely true. a number of my friends were surprised later in life to find that their dads had second, "secret" families.

Yeah, its everyone else who could use the extra help with polygamous relationships and its just too socially unacceptable right now. Eventually I assume the US might adopt civil unions as an alternative and most polygamous people would find that acceptable. The only real reason for pushing for homosexual marriage instead of civil unions is as a means of fighting against institutionalized bigotry which isn't that big a deal for polygamists.
