People should only be allowed to eat shark fin soup if they catch the shark with their bare hands.

Let's make that true for all animals!

People are animals.

Let's make that true for all people!

Animals aren't people.

But Soylent Green *IS*!

I see someone watched the NatGeo show last night about following the shark...what was her name? Natalie or something like that?

Guilty as charged. Her name was(?) Nicole. Poor little sharkey warkey. 🙁

She dove 3000 feet sometimes and traveled 6000 nautical miles while they tracked her. I would be pissed if she were finned! :|

My wife and i watched that also. It is a shame that they don't use the whole shark. there's got to be other uses for it. I was just waiting for the narrator to blame the US when we know this is an Asian (continent) issue.

What if we killed and ate the rest of the shark?

I keep seeing shark at the grocery store, but it so expensive. I want to try it.

If the entire shark is killed and eaten (the edible parts at least), then no they shouldn't be flogged for shark fin soup. Taking the fin and throwing the shark back, they should be flogged (along with trophy hunters, but that's another topic).

Oh and Leros, shark is great. You should get it sometime, and treat yourself.

Problem with shark meat is that it reaks of ammonia after a certain amount of time (within 24 hours, probably even sooner) after it dies. Thats why there is not a lot of shark meat-based dishes.

ive eaten small sharks that we can catch at the pier, just once. we had to soak it in milk for 24 hours to neutralize the ammonia smell. then it was fine. one of those ill try anything once type of things.

Considering so many sharks are killed only for the fins, the damn soup should be illegal. It'd be one thing if it were possible to farm raise sharks..maybe, but they're just killing hundreds of thousands of sharks only for their fins. It is pretty damaging to the ecosystem.

But so is much of the fishing industry. Whatever. Fuckers.

it shouldn't just be an asian (continent) issue. It's overfishing in the fishing industry as a whole. We can't totally blame asian countries either...Australians, west indians, etc, sharks are a delicacy...it's just the media only covering one portion of the problem.
Did you know fishing nets also catch dolphins and sharks? they are your tuna in a can!!! we just don't know it...

i understand that it is a waste to just collect the fins...but wouldn't it go back to the system? smaller fishes will eat them...right?

what was a waste?...killing buffalo just cuz it's an easy target!

There's some kind shark made in Iceland that smells horrible after preparation. My buddy tried some when he went there. I don't remember exactly how it's prepared, but I used to tease him about eating rotten shark. He bought a jar of it, and was sitting on the bus. He started opening the jar, and the tour guide didn't stop him quick enough. It filled the whole bus with stink :^D

Like others have said... I find it repugnant to use a portion of an animal, and throw the bulk of it away. Those people can rot in hell....

Do the fins taste better than the rest of the shark?

They don't really taste like anything as far as I know, they end up looking like transparent noodles a lot of the time, from what I have seen.
