Obama had no problem rushing to Dover base to get a 4am photo op when he was catching heat for not meeting with Afghanistan generals for months. Since deaths have been on the rise and Obama is sending more troops over he should have done Arlington. That said I am glad he isn't because he brings no honor. If I was a Gold Star family at the meeting I would be happier to have Biden.

snip... Reap what you have sewn.

i feel like benedict in last action hero on these boards...

maybe you could "rip what you have sewn" if you meant to undo something you did before, but you "reap what you have sown" when you get the result of your labor...

my fake eye is spinning in its socket...

[ ... ] Plus, deep down, you know I'm right on this issue. He positively hates everything America stands for. ...
No, sweetie, you've got it all backwards as usual. Obama doesn't hate America. That would be you. You can't tolerate the fact that 51% of American voters aren't as painfully ignorant and hate-filled as you are. While they may not agree with many of the things Obama's done, only the lunatic fringe sees it as Obama hating America.

As for the OP, while there's nothing wrong with it, it sure seems like a missed PR opportunity. Obama could use good press. On the other hand, it probably wouldn't have had any impact. Sane Americans won't care one way or another and the frothing nutters would have found some twisted spin to reinforce their anti-Obama rage.

Now my friends are all successful professionals and as such, they hate Obama.
See above re. lunatic fringe and frothing nutters. I am actually surrounded by successful professionals, in a fairly conservative industry no less, and I've not seen any of them express hatred for Obama. Disagreement to be sure, often passionately so, but they're all intelligent and informed and rational enough to draw a line between disagreement and the kind of deranged, raging insanity you spew. You seriously need help, and you might start by rising out of your little echo chamber every once in a while.

Isn't a salute a little improper? I know he's technically "commander in chief" but I thought hand-on-heart was the protocol for civilians.

I was pretty pissed at first but now I'm kind of glad. He doesn't deserve to be there and would be a disgrace to the people that gave their life defending America. He would just be spewing words he doesn't believe in by trying to honor them. He has no honor.

Wow, your such a partisan hack its just disturbing to read your posts.

We all know protocol isn't Obama's forte, but as Commander in Chief, it seems to me a salute would be pretty much mandatory.

my point is that i think that a bunch of the 'sane americans' who voted for bo do actually care about things like this, and you have got to throw them a bone if you are trying to keep them in your column...

since politics is a lot about the show it seems to me that he should take these opportunities to be smooth and "well of course i'm doing that, i'm the cic" about it...

i just look at things from the execution standpoint and the opportunity lost perspective... whether i agree with his politics or not it just hate to see lost potential...

I agree. I don't know that it would make much difference, but it was a missed opportunity that could have helped him in one of his weaker areas.

Actually, how he responds is entirely optional. The military is required to salute him as CinC but there is no rule that he responds in any particular way or at all.

The service member, however, must render and hold the salute until the Prez returns it or passes by, at which point he/she drops it.

I believe Reagan was the first president to return a salute and it was kind of a to do when he did. President Eisenhower, a former five star general, never returned a salute.

It is more of a courtesy/sign of respect if the President salutes back but he is under no obligation to do so.

I think it kind of looks funny for a civilian that has never served in the military to salute. They too often don't have it down right or they do it sloppy.

But, I have seen sloppy salutes by the military as well (all you old SF troopers know whut I'm talking about!) FWIW, I've never seen anything but professionalism by the units that are engaged in protocol missions, like the Marine guards or the 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) that guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and also provides ceremonial support.

Or it could have been that I was younger, more liberal, hung out with people just starting in their career not paying much taxes and as such didn't hear much negative things by association.

Now my friends are all successful professionals and as such, they hate Obama.

Funny. I'm young (30 later this year) but also a successful professional. All my friends support Obama for the most part. I'd say less than 10% of the people I know or meet in the last several years have been conservatives. Most of my co-workers are Obama supporters. Most of the people I meet when I go out tend to be Obama supporters. Really, in recent years I've only met 2 people who are as far right as you spidey. One is a former co-worker who often sounded just as nutty as you. The other is a co-worker who is actually pretty cool and doesn't discuss politics at work. But really spidey, you should notice by now that pretty much the entire board thinks of you as the most bat-shit crazy far right lunatic on these boards.

The same people who criticize Obama for not going are the same exact people who would criticize him for going. You can't make irrational people see reason, which is why you ignore them until they go away or its their naptime.

I don't know about that. He's got some tough competition from IHV and Danube.

Republican POTUSes get a pass for this and dem POTUSes do not. That's because the GOP has spent decades convincing the American public that democrats are hippies who hate the military and are soft on national security. Given that those are the circumstances, yes, this is the sort of thing that Obama should do.

If Spidey wants to listen to ONLY just the 15% American Minority that thinks Obama is the worst thing that ever happened since sex and sliced bread, Spidey should feel free to be 15% right and 85% wrong.
