Should newspapers just go?

That's what I do at lunch time most days.
Of course, I never BUY the paper. I either go to places that have one or two copies sitting out for customers or read the free weekly alternative papers.
 
I enjoy reading real paper and I wouldn't want to read a paper front to back, much less a whole book, looking at a backlit screen. Not every day. Besides you can't get an internet connection the underground - what am I supposed to read on the way to work?
 
I get my news from the radio, and online. I don't like seeing old traditions die, but newspapers are getting fairly marginal.
 
I'm biased, my wife works for a paper.

I say we need newspapers. They're still the single best method of advertising and coupon distribution available to most small to medium businesses.
 
Hell no. You need reading material for pool days and being outside laying around. Oh, you also need it on the bowl too. This is required.
 
I get zero news from TV, say 75% from the Net (mostly National and Global) and the rest from print. I subscribe to a local paper and USAToday. I love sitting on my porch and reading the paper in the morning while sipping a cup of coffee.
 
I was just reading (on the internet of course) where a lot of newspapers are closing up shop or cutting back to 3 copies a week. Don't know if it's the economy killing them or lack of interest in actual readers. But I get my news from the nets and the radio.

And they're good for starting fires on my charcoal grill. 😀
 
While I don't mind a newspaper, I won't purchase what I can get for free online. If they're sitting out I may read one but for the most part a little CNN < NPR while commuting< online news sources
 
I like reading the paper everyday.

The big killer for newspapers isnt losing subscribers-its losing advertisers.

 
The only time I get the paper is on Sunday, and that is for the real estate section, classifieds, sale papers, and coupons. Other than that we have a local news site I frequent which also links national stories from various online sources.
 
Where I live a lot of people don't have access to the internet or television at home, so the only way for them to get their news is from the newspaper. But from what I've seen newspapers should really be dedicated to local news only.

Yup. A friend of mine worked for the Chicago Tribune years ago. He always told me that the subscription fees were only to cover the physical distribution of the paper to the subscribers. All the actual content of the paper was paid for by advertisers.

Agreed. My wife is in advertising sales for a major publisher. She's the only sales rep in our area. She's under TREMENDOUS pressure b/c if she doesn't sell enough ads the paper will fold and ~15 people will lose their jobs, regardless of subscription #s.
