Should native born black Americans be called 'African American'?

Leros

Lifer
Stemming from the Describing black people as black thread, I have this to ask of ATOT.

In the US, we call all black people 'African-American'.

My personal view is that an African-American is:
1) a person from Africa who now lives in the US
2) a child born of parents who were from Africa originally (even if the child was born in the US)

Otherwise, you would be a black American. My ancestors came from various places in Europe. I consider myself a white American; I don't go around calling myself an Italian-German-French-British-American.

What do you guys think?

I don't really care. I don't think most black people care either. I don't think many black people are offended by being called black.

I think we should bring back oriental too. Asian is too vague.

yes

people of asian descent born in America are referred to as Asian-Americans.

More specifically, chinese-americans, korean-americans, etc.

no difference

I use the term East Asian since Oriental is now a racist word.

I take more issue with people saying things like "I'm Irish!!" when they've never even been there.

So my wife would be: Irish-English-Scottish-German-Belgian-American? (If not more)

What about cases like me, first generation US born from Polish parents? I consider myself American and describe myself as Polish, not Polish-American. Same thing with some German friends I know - when asked they would say "German", not "German American". Same with Russian or Ukrainian...

Just Americans. Americans can be black, white, yellow, beige, tan, or mahogany and have ancestry from any country on earth. That's one of the cooler things about America.

If we have to break it down I'm for Negroid, Caucasoid, Australoid, or Mongoloid American.

Hmmm

your poll question says "Same question, but only black people answer"

Yet you had an option for "I'm not black" ... furthermore four people actually answered it...
