Should malls be allowed to keep kids out if they're not with a parent?

No one has a "RIGHT" to be anywhere on private property.

Kids have most of the cash and if stores want to shut them out.. they do it at their own peril, but they are fully within their rights to do so.

now thats im of age for pretty much everything (r-rated movies, buying smokes, drinking), i think they should put the clamps on things like this everywhere on everything (no movies after 10, no mall on friday/saturday nights, etc.) for kids 18 and under. but i only say that because im selfish and it doesnt concern me anymore. 😉

Walden Galleria in Buffalo, NY currently uses this tactic and it works great. Teenagers and kids are no longer "run" the mall and it can be enjoyed in relative peace again. I only hope more malls employ this policy.

i would think this would hurt their sales considerably.

There is a cause and effect to this. Sure, kids will spend less money but now families and those above 21 could come and spend money in the malls in which they may not otherwise because they feel harrassed by teenagers. Teenagers do not deserve as much freedom as they think. They can wait til they are 21 for that.

On one hand it stops large crowds of teens from hanging around, shoplifting and intimidating others who are actually there to shop. On the other hand, it removes a place that is safe for teens to go and takes away the right to shop for teens who genuinely want to go shopping.

But its their choice and if they feel it won't hurt their business, i'm sure the teens can find other areas to hang out and spend money.

yup im tired of goign to the malls and tryign to shop with 19000000000 little brats loitering and clogging up the mall.

they have something like this in the mall of america, we were stopped at about 7 or so, so see what age we were (19)

but i think their policy has more to do with the legal curfew and such

It works well. When my wife and I go to the mall on Friday or Saturday night it's a much nicer experience. They started doing this in Albany a few months ago.....

Carousel Mall in Syracuse, NY has a similar policy already in place. A curfew for people under 18 unless accompanied with parents. Was basically used to deter loitering by gangs and delinquents

What the hell. This is a free country.

I know in your SouthPaW1227-centric world, the only rights the courts look at are yours specifically, but in reality, others have rights too, and sometimes their rights collide with yours. Owners of private land have every right to limit access.

[edit]
And as someone else pointed out, with regard to age discrimination, teenagers are not a protected class.

"That's just totally ridiculous," said an incredulous Gabriel Fils, 16, a City of Poughkeepsie resident who visits the mall. "How can they do this? We're some of the major buyers of their products."

LOL. Bullsh|t. You have no money, you're a 16 year old girl.

Plenty of malls already do this. And it works great.

I think there should be a 10pm curfew,on the streets/sidewalks etc. too.

Cut down on the petty thefts/vandelism.

Cops see you roaming around, drag your ass to jail.

Papers Please, hmm no State ID, you come to jail,Now.

Plenty of cities already ALSO do this.
