my school has about 30 or so old computers that have been sitting out in the rain. the teacher told me i could have em free. some of em have trashed mobos, some are okay. some of em have processors (pentium 200's), some of em dont. (duh) most of em have 2 sticks of 16 mb's of RAM. so, should i take em all, pimp out a few of em, and turn it into a beowulf cluster linux box?

even if it's not a guaranteed it'll work?

Seriously, it's not worth the time, hassle, or effort it will take to throw them out when you realize you have no use for the couple that do work.

of course they got to work. i don't want complete trash. better find some old socket 7's to test them on.

i've got 4 pentium 166 boxes, so yeah, i'll pay ya. not a lot though, but hey if its sitting there why not.

We have a winner! 😀

I tried the same thing once, ended up just throwing most of it out because of the hassle factor in pulling out the few things that were worth anything.

: ) Hopper

the mobo there said socket 5. i seriously doubt anything could break those processors. i was reading an article where they literally had to take a hammer and punch to make it through.

no hard drives. i do have a spare 1 and 5 gig hard disc. the 5 gig never even had anything on it, for some reason i could never get it to work.

mobo's will still work. processor will still work. the only thing that might not is the memory, i think. you just dry em out, maybe hairdry em off, and stick em back together. these systems also have power supplies, im not sure how happy they are.
