Should I/We get another cat?

So, for the longest time the wife and I have had three cats. I had two and she had one when we got together. My oldest died and a few months later she went out and got another cat (note that SHE went and got another cat). So back to three cats.

Recently her cat had to be put down. She was very attached to this cat. So that left us with two cats.

My cat Azrael is 11 and semi antisocial, but plays when she feels up to it.
"Our" cat Mittens is ~1.5 and is a little terror.

The wife would like a new cat for Valentines with the hope the two youngest would essentially have playmates. I just see it as another mouth to feed. We have plenty of space and no kids.

So, to get a third cat or not... That is the question.

EDIT: For those that say "Get a dog" she wants a little "yup-yup" dog. I just don't think I can do that.

UPDATE 02/15/09: Came home from lunch and found an ~8 month old kitten sitting by our garage. Clean and already litter trained. Hrm, maybe saved us on adoption fees. Poor thing was shivering and hungry. It is currently 15f degrees out. PIC
 
We have 9 so I am probably biased but my answer is yes as long as you don't plan to dump them the moment you have kids (assuming you don't currently have any).
 
Yep, get another cat. If you run out of cats you and our wife might do something you'll both regret forever ... like have kids.

Do you run a cat shelter or is it a halfway home for lonely old ladies?

I like Bengal cats, but if we do get a third it will be another rescue from the shelter. Which is right down the road.

That is also perfectly fine. we have had 8 cats in my lifetime 7 of which we got from a shelter as kittens

every single one of them has been excellent

why not with a post like you made it'd be fitting?

A third cat isn't that much extra and it allows more stimulation for the other cats.

I have had 2, 3 and 4 cats at a time. 2 is better than only 1, but sometimes spats break out and there is no 'mediator'. I have noticed that when one cat is just being a jerk to another, the others will defend the one being picked on until the first cat "gets it".

If you bring them to the vet together the vet should be able to extend a decent discount

 
Kittens are so fun. I would get another cat in a heart beat. I just don't know of my current cat would approve. She's the boss... 😛
 
Our stray calico was the best cat ever. She use to hang out on our front lawn in the evenings and check us out. One day we let her in and she seemed to like our place so we decided to keep her. We took her to the vet and got her shots. She had dead kittens inside her and would have certainly died as well if we hadn't taken her in. She died last year after we had her for over 22 years. Remember she chose you.

Yeah, we have tried to let her go 3 times now and she follows us back into the house. We'll hold on to her and put up some fliers. The kitten is clean and seems to be someones, so I'll give it a shot to find the owner before keeping it or handing it over to the humane society (non kill shelter).

I am just one big goo-goo-eyed sucker for stories like yours. They make me feel deeply warm all over . . . looks around menacingly . . . anyone got a problem with that?

Cool, that's how it works. You start thinking about cats and one just shows up. Anyway, I recommend a trip to the vet for inspection, injection, deworming, and the other thing.
