should I wait until this summer to buy a new laptop?

I have an old inspiron 8500 that's dying and I'm looking for a new laptop to replace it. I really liked the concept of the 8500 as a good blend of power and portability and I want a laptop that would be basically the same thing. The only laptop I've found that has everything I want is the Asus G1. I'm almost sold on it, but I'm wondering if I should wait for this summer and see what new stuff comes out or if I should just get the G1 now.

if you wait till the summer, then you will just end up waiting till the fall....it's a cycle that keeps on going. Just buy now and enjoy.

The A8Js would also be a good choice;; it is even more portable and just as powerful as the G1. As for waiting, the only time you wait is if you actually can afford to do so. If your current laptop is dying, replace it now. If it was a matter of going off to school next fall, then you could wait since you wouldn't need the notebook until July/August anyway.

I'd either buy now when you can still get an XP pro based notebook (from IBM/Lenovo) or wait til summer or later when Vista SP1 comes out.

screens on the A8Js is rather leaky. the G1 has a much better screen

in all honesty i think you might do well to wait.

santa rosa platfomr is out then isnt it? 800mhz FSB, faster C2D's and possibly DX10 level GPU's

No. It won't be out until at least April.

I think I heard dell was going to release a new laptop based on Centrino Pro a.k.a. Santa Rosa around April, but Intel announced Centrino Pro will be released on May 8th. If you can I would wait until then. You'll either be able to buy the current systems cheaper or pickup one of the new ones.

Yes since it's just around the corner you should wait until Santa Rosa is released. That way, you can buy today's high end at a lower price or get something totally new.

Also, I read somewhere that Intel is going to start replacing the BIOS with EFI in Santa Rosa.

i don't get what's so big about the 800MHz FSB...it's not like it'll have any (significant) performance gains, if any. just wait for prices to go down

I notice that most notebooks come with Intel Integrated Graphics 950. Anyone know when we might see the X3000? Or a DX10 notebook counterpart from ATI or nVidia?

It's not the 800MHz FSB that's so appealing, it's the DX10 integrated graphics.

You'll see better integrated graphics with Santa Rosa. As for mobile, DX10 dedicated cards - probably sometime around the release of Santa Rosa.

After testing all the brands available at BestBuy, OfficeMax, and OfficeDepot....and then trying out a friend's ThinkPad...I've decided to get a ThinkPad as soon as they offer a Centrino Pro configuration. Hopefully they will include X3000. I know the downside of the ThinkPads is they don't always offer the latest and greatest tech.

But my God, I never knew it until now, but the build quality of a ThinkPad is leaps and bounds above anything else I've ever tried. The keyboard is so comfortable, it is jaw dropping good after typing on such shallow, mushy keys on all the other brands. Simply Amazing!
