Should I wait for ATI 6000 series or just go ahead with 5870/5970?

When are they planning to release it anyway?

why do people have to ask such silly questions? its your pc so you are the one that should know if your current setup is getting it done or not. there is no official eta on the 6000 series so if you need a card now then get one.

if you're not able to play the games you want to play now, then get a new card. no more cards are scheduled from both companies in the immediate future.

SI is "expected" anywhere between... lets say... September and next March. We don't really have any insider knowledge that will help you there

right now, id wait, depending on what your current card is.. and a whole bucketload of other variables. if your card is sub 5850 in performance, id get that or maybe the 5770 if you can get two of those for less than 300..

Well, Charlie posted a bit ago that SI taped out.. So in theory we are on track for the fall.

The thing is that ATI has no reason to rush a launch of their next gen. The 5970 still holds the crown, their other cards compete well in their respective price brackets, and the 5870 still generally sells for more now than it did at launch.

They will not go back on a schedule just because they may not "need" to release a part.

It will be done when it is done regardless of the state of the market at the time. If they delay it we could see delays in the next generation as well, not something they would risk.

would really help if we knew what hardware you're running

anyways, unless you're playing at 25*16, I think you should try to wait if you have a 4870+ or GTX 260+ GPU. Q4 is probably the closest time frame for ATI's 6XXX series.

I don't believe I see the word "delay" anywhere in my original post...

My feeling is it will be quite awhile before we see the next gen, so you might as well go for it.

The only thing that brings my 5970 to its knees is Ultra quality in Metro 2033. [redacted] game, but quite stunning visually.

So, if you want to max out Metro 2033 you need either tri-SLI, Tri-fire, or to wait until next gen.

If you don't care about that, why not just get this gen?

nevermind, completely missed the fact the post date was from 6 months ago...

By the time you wait for 6k, I bet you ATI (or whoever) will say something about 7k (or next gen), and you will be stuck in this dilemma all over again. 5850 or bust!

I could care less about Athalon, per say. Wait, this is a thread about graphics. Whoops :/.

Well according to Nemesisès link, and thus the semiaccurate article, AMD/ATi may be launching their next product almost in the same period the 5xxx was released last year. september/october
