Should I use Server 2003?

I like to remote into my system at home to check my email, access documents, set up downloads, etc etc during the day while at work, but often times my girlfriend wants to access the computer too, and we end up kicking each other out.

Since I am going to likely be swapping some things around soon, I am thinking of installing Server 2003. Will this allow me to remote into the system and have her work on the system concurrently? Will I need a special license to allow this?

I obviously don't know too much about using this OS or function. Will it cause any issues running everyday applications and photo-editing applications? Anything that will run on XP will run on this OS, correct?

Is there a better option for this?

Thanks for any info...

It depends on how you install it. If you run in administrative mode you shouldn't need any special license. I think this is limited to just 5 connections though.

Correct, although you only get two terminal server licenses to use for remote connections and then your girlfriend can use the local connection, so 3 connections total.

Frankly, it seems likely that you need a second computer anyway.

But, yeah, Windows Server 2003 can allow up to three simultaneous users (one console plus two remote) without any additional licensing.

You may have to add some services or components to Server 2003 to run certain programs, like games. There's a web site that has details on modifying Server 2003 to make it more suitable for workstation use. You'll doubtless want to remove the obnoxious "High Security Component" that comes installed and greatly interferes with Internet browsing.

Hmm, I see, thanks for the info!

And also, I do have a second... and a third computer, not counting laptops, etc.

But I prefer to only leave this one on all of the time. And when I go in, I am doing small tasks such as organizing, starting torrents, getting documents, checking email, etc.

Is there any way to accomplish this without using Server 2003?

And I don't run any games on this system generally btw.

And what is that website you mention btw? It might be a good read...

Wow, thank you thank you thank you!! This way I can keep MCE on the machine, correct? Do you see any reason why that wouldn't work for MCE since it is just SP2?

One dumb question... obviously we will have to have seperate user accounts, correct? Otherwise we would kick each other out?

It should work just fine on MCE, and you should be able to log in at the same time with the same user account. I'm not positive though. You just have to try it. I did this on my XP Pro machine at home and worked like a charm. No issues whatsoever.

On that page there is a long discussion, and I believe they said that there were some special settings to logon at the same time with the same user. I can't remember if they got it to work or not. I am going to read it again when I get a chance at home to make it work.

Hey, I just wanted to post and say that I got it to work and it works WONDERFULLY! I am able to logon at the same time as my girlfriend. We had to create a seperate account for her though. The way to get into the same account just wasn't worth it for me to play with.

BTW, I did it on MCE 2005.

yeah, I skimmed through all those comments, but I only followed the directions in the article and it worked fine for me. I've probably never tried logging in at the same time with the same user though. Maybe I'll try that out, and see if it works on mine.

Works wonderfully for me as I am in remote desktop all day away from home and girlfriend is often there before work/school or on days off.
