Should i use a static ip?

I want to open up a port, but the guide says i need to use a static ip. should i use one? i only have 1 computer, no network, so there shouldnt be a problem right? thanks

yea you don't need to, but if ever your ip changes you'll have to go through the same spiel again.

and there are reasons that your dynamic ip would change, even if you're the only one on the network.

Ok, when i go to google and type whats my ip, every website will tell me. so i type that number into the bar, and that works. however when i actually get the ip that its supposed to be defaulted to, the one that says ip in the settings, doesnt work...wtf?

If you need to port forward, you have to have some type of router. If your computer is hooked up directly to the internet then you don't need to forward anything as all the ports should be open, and the only thing that might be blocking them is some software firewall (i.e. Windows Firewall, Zonealarm).

I removed zone alarm, only have one computer, and its connected to the internet thru the linksys router.

Then, yes, I think you need to do a static IP through the linksys router in order to do port forwarding.

Which router do you have? Is it the new Linksys firmware, or the old? (not that it matters, enabling a static IP is almost done all on the computer and not the router, bet you didn't know that!?)

(OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, so don't blame me if it's wrong)

Little guide for ya,

FIRST, go to the router (192.168.1.1) and go to the dhcp part and make that last number higher (like 192.168.1."110" were 110 is the number that you CHANGE IT TOO)

-First, go to run, then type "cmd" then hit enter
-Then type in "ipconfig /all" (without quotes, and I think that thats the command)
-Now, there is certain info that is important on this page, your going to want the IP adress, subnet mask, default gateway, and the DNS servers.
-NOW, go to control panel, network connections, right click your local area connection that your using
-Now, go down to internet protical (TCP/IP), highlight it and select properties, and fill in the info on that page (EXCEPT THE IP, Make it 192.168.1.102 (or anything between 101-109 for the last digit)
-Some people have more than two dns servers, you can add the other couple somewere else, but it somewere on that page (or links from it)

(That is all from the top of my head so don't blame me if it's wrong)

NEXT, your going to want to forward the port in the linksys router. So I would first suggest you see if the internet still works after we fck'ed with it so much. If it doesn't than just reset the router and your cable/dsl modem, if it still doesn't work than try a reboot, and if it still doesn't work that you did something wrong.

NOW, were ready to forward those ports. Go to the linksys page (192.168.1.1 default name and password is "admin" and PLEASE change the password if thats what it is). Go to the port fowarding/triggering pages, were ever that may be. Now just fill in the appropriate info and if you don't know the TCP/UDP (i think those are the names) then just leave it as both.
It's also a good idea to port trigger the same ports too.

And YOUR DONE 😛

Now you can also find all this info on that portforward.com site, but what fun would that be.

(Once again, this is off the TOP OF MY HEAD, so don't blame me if it's wrong)

Thanks alot man...i also saw that on portforward.com. Problem is, the ip that SUPPOSED to work when i type it in (192.168.1.1) DOESNT. the only thing that works is when i go to google, type in whats my ip, and it gives sites that tell you. the number is TOTALLY different, but it works when i enter it in the explorer. So ill start from that before i do anything else 🙁 thanks man. nice system btw.

I thought that ALL linksys router used 192.168.1.1 (type it in adress bar of IE).

192.168.1.1?
192.168.0.1?

Thats what I thought it was suppose to be!?!? Thats what mine is. Look up your router on portforward.com and that'll tell you what the IP should be for connection to the router. If that doesn't work, something is seriously fsck'ed up.

go to run, type "cmd" without quotes. then in the dos window type "ipconfig" without quotes. the default gateway listed is the ip you'll need to type into your browser in order to access the modem/router's interface.

I prefer the command "ipconfig /all" in the dos prompt. Gives you ever last bit of info.

But the default gateway is the part you want to look for.
