Should I use 128bit WEP to secure my wireless network?

I am just using it for home use on my DSL. I currently have it set to 128bit WEP and has a password so only clients with that password can get in. Will this slow my connection at all? Thanks.

It might slow down the connection but the added security is worth it I think. Besides if you are in a large city if you have WEP people will skip you for an open WAP.

I have to ask the same. I just ordered a MS 802.11g router, and was gonna set it up without WEP encryption. A friend of mine mentioned that it slows the wireless connection noticeably, although it won't matter much for browsing with the overhead a g router has. But is it honestly worth it for security? It's supposed to be pretty easy to hack anyway, right? Or is it just a good common sense safety precaution? PEACE.

If you are worried about wireless security update your router it most likely supports WPA and you will also need to download the patch from MS (if you are using windows).

On my linksys WRT54G router I do not have WEP enabled, I simply allow only specified MAC addresses. I live in a small town so I'm not worried about having a MAC address spoofed.

My neighbor, otoh, has a open WAP, one day I'll tell him soon as I'm done downloading stuff off edonkey 😛

I have mine enabled (the only one in the neighborhood). I just did it to do it, I don't care if any of my neighbors use my connection and I don't have anything on my computers I don't want getting out. I haven't noticed any slowdowns either. I play Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam with no issues.

It's nice to troll around for open APs

For security, use the 128 WEP. Change the network ID and password to something other than factory default. You could even restrict usage by MAC address to further secure the usage.

Use the 128, I've tried using my wireless net with it on and off and really didn't notice much of a diffrence at all.

maybe i'm paranoid - but I have it enabled - along with MAC filtering.
You can never make it safe - but might as well make it at least hard to break.

As for the speed - a normal user connected to the internet with DSL should not see much slowdown.
OTOH - if you transfer files on your own LAN from one comp. to the other then there will be slowdown.
