Should I upgrade?

My current rig is:
G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) Aegis DDR4 2400MHZ (PC4-19200)
Intel i3-6100
Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel H110 Micro ATX motherboard
290x 8gb
1920x1200 monitor
850watt platinum powersupply
h100 watercooler
corsair carbide r500
2x ssd
2x hdd

i use the pc for watching steaming videos and some gaming (Witcher 3, Gta 5, Fallout 4, trove and way to much time in terraria)


today i pulled the trigger and got a i5-6600k as the i3 was hindering the 290x

now i am trying to figure out do i need to go all the way and spend another $200 and get 3000mhz memory and a z710 motherboard.

or am i not going to see much difference?

Upgrading just to upgrade the memory to DDR4 3000 would not be worth it IMO, but if you plan to OC your 6600k, a Z170 would be helpful for that , and likely would be worth it.

I wouldn't expect that much difference unless you plan to overclock the 6600k. Do you know you need a heat sink for that chip?

That build doesn't make a lot of sense. A $100 liquid cooler with a $50 motherboard that probably has a voltage limit. And then the 6600k makes no sense whatsoever in an H110 board.

I think you should upgrade your motherboard only. Check for a Z series that will support all the other components you have.

I am not going to be overclocking this system.

That build doesn't make a lot of sense. A $100 liquid cooler with a $50 motherboard that probably has a voltage limit. And then the 6600k makes no sense whatsoever in an H110 board.

Looking at my system as it is right now, i agree with you about the build. Earlier this year i had a high-end xeon setup, and when i lost my job, i sold the motherboard/proc/memory and started using my laptop. Then that died a month later, and i bought the cheapest thing to hold me over.

Now i have some cash, I am looking to get something mid range, to hold me over.

yes, but way out of my budget. I picked up the i5-6600k for $125 and next paycheck i was trying to deicide if i need to put more money into the motherboard / memory or if i am throwing away money on a small performance gain and should just save it for a kabbylake build.

Yes. I wasn't expecting a $100 water cooler with a $110 i3 CPU.

If you're not overclocking, sell that thing and get a cheap tower cooler instead.

Now, if you were to persue overclocking of your i5-6600K, using said water cooler, that's another story entirely, and probably worth it to buy a "Z" board, in order to overclock the "K" CPU. I'm not really sure what the point is to buy a "K" CPU, and NOT take advantage of the overclocking potential. Maybe just residual resale value? (Then again, I'm a pretty die-hard overclocker, and I attempt to overclock, almost everything I can. Except, strangely, video cards. It has been my experience that they are flaky enough on their own, what with the DC loads I put on them.)

Edit: You can get Z170 boards for under $100. Look at the ASRock Z170 Pro4S. It's a lower-end Z170 board, but it hits most of the feature highlights, SATAe, M.2 PCI-E/SATA, 6 SATA6G ports, front USB3.0, Crossfire, BLCK OC (with BIOS 3.00 and lower), regular OC (with a "K" CPU), and Kaby Lake support (With BIOS 7.xx or newer). I own two of these, and have G4400 CPUs in them, BLCK OCed, one as high as 4.455Ghz.

Edit: It's just my personal preference, but I would spend $100 on a Z170 board, even with locked Celeron CPU, before I would spend on a $100 water cooler. Then again, I've never owned a water cooler, so maybe that's unsurprising.

Save the money, keep your current ram. The performance gains from faster ram are miniscule, and unless you're editing photos or videos you don't need more than 16GB.

16 GB is fine for all current games, and since you're running at stock so is your motherboard.

Also, a decent air cooler with 92mm - 120mm fan will be very quiet since you'll be at stock.

after reading a bunch of reviews... i decided against the asrock z710 series, as it seems to have memory issues.

i guess i am going to wait till next friday, then i will have around 200 to spend on a decent mb... any suggestions?

Unless your current motherboard is failing: keep using it, it will work just as well at stock. Keep the money in the bank (or pay off any debts) for when there is a real upgrade.

current motherboard is a h110 chipset.. from what i have been reading it is using pci express 2.0. would that hamper my video card?

i know on paper it does. but for gameplay....

Nope, not even for a GTX 1080.

Sometimes there really is no good reason to upgrade. But if you save the money you can buy something else you need or want sooner.
