I am always wanting to be on the cutting edge of technology and I think its time for me to sharpen up again. Take a look at the rig in my sig. Would I really notice much difference if I went to a X6800 setup. Would like to only change out the MB, CPU, and MEM.

I play games like COD2, FEAR, Age3, Oblivion.
 
You have already answered your own question with, "I am always wanting to be on the cutting edge of technology and I think its time for me to sharpen up again." Now if you were asking, "Given what I have, Do I need to upgrade?". I would answer, "No, you do not need to at this time." I'd say wait till next year until all the quad cores are out in supply and decently priced and then ask again. This is just my own opinion on what I would do if I had your setup.
 
I definately think you would see a remarkable increase in performance but there will be the AMD fans that will post in here and dispute that.

I say...If you can afford to get that...GET IT!!!...I wish that I could...:thumbsup:
 
I'm comfortable to say that you won't notice a difference in the mentioned applications, except Oblivion which I have no clue because I haven't played it. In other games, level loading will be somewhat faster but that's about it. If anything, unless you go with an NV motherboard, losing SLI will affect the performance in a very honest way. 😀 As a matter of fact, I still maintain my opinion that a fast single-core is more than enough for current games.

Then again the upcoming NF680i looks very promising and if you like to stay on the cutting edge, you know what you want and most of the time it's hard to resist. (We all know, don't we?) You don't need others' approval for your satisfaction. Just buy what you want and enjoy what the technology has to offer! (Although X6800 seems like a lot of money for that)

I don't know what qualifies as "remarkable", but yes, you will see some performance increases. But whether it is enough of an increase for you to spend the money/effort is up to you.

Here is a benchmark showing FEAR with SLI GTXs at 1600x1200 on both your chip (well, same clock speed) and the C2Ds. About a 10% increase.

Some games have really no increase (COD2, HL2). Some are like FEAR at 10%. Oblivion, on the other hand, is both. Mostly no increase outdoors, but a 20-30% increase in the city areas.
