Here's what I have:
2.4 P4 (533 MHz bus)
Radeon 9800 SE(I know it's crap)
512 Megs of RAM

Question is, will this system allow me to game at medium quality for another year before I upgrade, or should I dish out ~$180 for a 6600 GT now?

your system isnt bleeding edge anymore but its still pretty good.... you can try and softmod the 9800se to get a few more frames
medium settings should be fine for all games coming out this year

6600gt will be faster but not WOW faster

in a year the whole dual core thing will be on us and you should be able to get significantly more for your money

Yep 6600gt sounds like your best bet. It'll be good for gaming at medium quality for another year at which point you would buy a whole new system.

I would hold off. Wait for a dual-core CPU, mobo, etc. When those are prevailant, then see what your options are. You are still operational with the stuff that you need to do, right?

If there are any specific games you want to play, then go for it. Otherwise, if you are surviving, then wait. Technology is moving fast and prices are always dropping. It never hurts to wait a bit longer.
