Would it be worthwhile to upgrade to Leopard at this point or should I wait until Snow Leopard is released? I am still on Tiger.

I say wait 2 more hours and decide haha. I mean Snow Leopard could be coming out very soon in which case I say there's no reason not to wait. If Snow Leopard wont be out for another year then I say upgrade and upgrade again when the release snow leopard.

I agree (for the most part) with FerraraZ, wait to see what happens at Macworld. I wouldn't upgrade twice in one year though.

Yeah ur right hah I guess I'm just stoked for snow leopard and for what it has to offer. Mega is right though upgrading twice in a year is a waste of money because chances are the added features your getting wont merrit how much money your spending in a year just on OS.

Makes me wonder if Snow Leopard will be a free upgrade or not - most consumers won't notice the performance enhancements because a 2.0ghz dual-core Intel chip already runs Safari, Mail, etc. instantly. Perhaps at a discounted price?

I'd love to see Apple release 10.6 as a free upgrade to 10.5 users, but I doubt they'll do it. It doesn't fit with how they do business by and large.

Well, they did release 10.1 as a free update to people that were running 10.0, but that was only because 10.0 sucked something fierce, pretty much universally. I know that there are some that do not like Leopard or say that it is unstable, but 10.0 was pretty much regarded as horrible by everyone.

I think it's mostly under the hood improvements. Basically a giant service pack to improve dual core and 64-bit support among other things. I agree current users should get the upgrade at a discount, especially those like me who recently bought a new Mac.

i'm going with UPGRADE ftw. No announcements on SL, besides, you should be able to find a copy of Leopard in the $50-60 range (I did recently)

The box set seems like a really good idea. I know when Leopard came out I ended up buying iLife '08 and iWork '08 separately anyways. I didn't buy them all at the same time but if the box set had been available, I certainly would have to save some money.

I'm confused about something else though. I don't understand why some people expect Snow Leopard to be a free update, even to Leopard users. I mean, it's not like Steve Jobs snapped his fingers and came up with all this 'under the hood' stuff, right? Apple has probably spent millions of dollars and thousands of man hours perfecting all of the under the hood changes. Surely someone has to pay for it and, while I do think Apple is really cool, they're still a business. Anyways, I can see Snow Leopard being a cheaper upgrade, but free? That doesn't make any sense. After all, there's nothing keeping you from sticking with Leopard and it's 300+ new features.

Maybe I'm missing something and someone here can clarify for me.

BTW: No Mini upgrades... sigh. I'd really like to pick one of those up someday.

Yeah, the box set sounds real nice. Think I'll snag that too!

As far as Snow Leopard being a free update, remember that we're all geeks here. Most Mac users are average consumers. Average consumers need a reason to buy an upgrade over what they already have, and Jobs has already said that Snow Leopard isn't about bells and whistles. Safari, Mail, etc. already launch instantly, even on older Macs, and that's what most people use - just the basic office/web type of stuff. It either needs to be free or very cheap because "under the hood" enhancements aren't really compelling enough for the average Mac user to shell out money for an upgrade. For power users like us, we'd be happy to upgrade, but Apple has to play this out for the majority of their consumers.

Of course, they did just release a $2799 laptop that has a non-removable battery, so logic may not apply here...

Yea.. logic doesn't always apply with Apple. I'm expecting a $79, or $99, upgrade for current Leopard users though.

You're probably right. I don't think I'd removed the geek factor far enough from the equation. However, I still don't see free happening. Are you looking at it as a free to Leopard users free or free to everyone type free? I suppose being free to Leopard users and charging a smaller fee to everyone else sounds a little more reasonable.

LOL. Don't get me wrong. I'm heading back to school in about two weeks after a three year hiatus and am bracing for the ultimate poor again. I'll take anything free that I can get my hands on! And I've got Leopard so bring it on!

Oh yes, the 17 inch MBP... Unibody - hooray! Fixed battery - ...? I was following some keynote coverage at work yesterday and someone mentioned the battery lasted so long you didn't need to carry a charger. So, your 8 (6 or 7 more likely) hours are up, then what? I'd much rather have a 6 hour removable battery and carry a spare. Who knows.

Hopefully soon, that is what I wanted also a mini with the Nvidia graphics rumor to be true.
