should i upgrade my sound card?

Anubis

No Lifer
im still useing a Audigy 1 from back in like 2001

is there any reason to get a new card?

i ask cause i just ordered a bunch of comp stuff and figured if i was gonna get a new one, now would be the time

i listen to music on my comp more then anything but i do also game as well

I think it's unecessary unless you don't like what you have now. There's no real industry drive to upgrade sound cards often (compared to GPUs especially).

It's not like "noo.... MPEG4 music is here! My APU (audio processing unit?) can't keep up! I need to upgrade to a Audigy 6700 GTX!!"
(wonders if that will ever happen?)

yea thats kinda what i figured

dont really pay attention to SC stuff

If you use headphones, you probably want to look in to the X-Fi since you game. The Head Related Transfer Functions(HRTFs) they're using are supposed to be far better than what the Audigies use and are actually realisitic this time around, so it's probably Aureal tech. Bonus points for having an Audigy 1, since if you can fill out the settlement form, you can get a $62.50 credit from Creative, bringing your cost of a new X-Fi down to $67.50.

Doh, I just realized it was "25% off, up to $65.25", so that's actually $130-25%, or 32.50. Still, that brings it down to about $100.

Speakers? Headphones? What kind?

both

comp speakers are currently Klipsch promedia 4.1

headphones are Grado SR-125s - however i dont use them on teh comp much because i have to plug them in to the back of teh comp as i dont have afront jack and there isnt one of the speakers themselfs, and i dont need to as noone here complaisn about how loud i play mu music

i can also go out into a 6..1 home thearter , tho that doesnt happen often

Cool. Just wanted to make sure the money wouldn't be better spent on the speakers/headphones than on a new soundcard.

If your main objective is music I would suggest, if you aren't already, a resampling plugin for your media player of choice - 16/48 is enough....if you're already running that then it's up to you if you think the potential change in music quality is worth the $100

If you're that into audio to have that type of equipment, you might consider an X-Fi. It really does sound better on the klipsch speaker set. Considering those aren't just your average 20 dollar earbuds you're using either, you really ought to look into it at least. The platinum is 199, but with settlement, that knocks off 50 bucks to 150... that'd be a nice upgrade to have good audio quality, and the jacks on the front of your PC for listening to your headphones with the full 1/4 inch jack (and it automatically mutes your speakers if you want it to). The Audigy 1 doesn't even compare. I've been using M-audio cards because creative never sounded as good until now. Finally I can use just one soundcard again...

Well you don't have to get it 🙂

If you want something that's better for music, you could do dual soundcards and use the Audigy for games and then something like a Chaintech AV710 for stereo music listening.

Sure. Lots of people do something along those lines. (I don't do it myself though so I don't know a lot of the specifics).

I think over at headfi.com it's pretty common.

You'd have to change where your speakers or headphones are plugged in when changing between cards though. (Not a big deal if you get some 1/8" extension cables and run them to your desktop)

CompUSA was blowing out their Audigy ZS 2 Gamer's a month ago or so, $69 after rebate. I found out about X-Fi afterwards but got sticker shock after seeing the prices and wondered if I would really notice a difference anyways. I'm using 2.0 and rarely if ever use headphones.

No you do not.
If you primarily a gamer, there is very little performance advantage in getting a newer audigy2 if you own an old audigy1 (or even an sblive). Sound quality is also probably not an issue even with the so called high-end computer speakers.

Anandtech had a review of the new Xfi and the difference in cpu utilization was so miniscule (if compared with prior reviews with audigy2 series) that it makes no sense to upgrade.

Oh man i cant believe im still using the first old sblive since 98 and about to pick up any cheap audigy just because my motherboard only has single 32bit PCI and need it for capture card while most soundcards wont go into PCI-X 100/133 slot.
