Im thinking of upgrading proccessor its an AMD 3800+ (single core) and i have a 939 pin motherboard the processors im thinking of moving up to are an Opteron 170/175 or an AMD 4400+

I heard the opterons are alot better for overclocking and run slightly faster than the X2 line of processors clock for clock so im swinging towards the opteron

I dont really want to change my board to a fit an AM2 or core2duo processor as that would mean i would have to replace my RAM also because its DDR 184 pin not DDR2 240 pin

Im going to build a new rig at the end of this year or early next year i just want a reasonable processor up until then as my current one doesnt play games like Supreme commander or Medieval 2:TW that great

Any suggestions or reccomendations?

Hi. I just did, and so far, I was expecting SO much more.

I had an Althon FX-55, Ati x800PE, 3 gigs corsair XMS, etc, and the system was DAMN SWEET. I even ran many recent games at 1600x1200 with many options on high, some games with 2-4x AA as well, and still got decent performance.

Well, I upgraded to the q6600 2.4, 2 gigs of Ballisitix (sp?) memory, 2 high end (says Tom's drive lists) sata drives for striping RAID, and a 8800 superclocked GTS, and evga 680i MB.
With some quick testing, but system would no longer run Gothic III (reinstall), as it crashes now, Tabula Rasa did run better, and on max settings, which was a treat, but I was STILL expected much higher framerates that 30-40 fps. It's dual core friendly now too.

I still need to do more testing. My graphics viewer is much faster, but not to the degree I was hoping. Winrar and quickpar were barely faster, but I was running then on an older drive, but still, I expected the CPU side of the app to scream.

Still testing apps and games, but so far, not horribly impressed for $1600. I got all top notch components as well. I need my research before buying. I was thinking this right would be 2x-5x+ faster than my old rig, but I'm not seeing that at all. Personally, I have NON-real work benchmarks, so I don't bother with them. I test with software I already run now.

The dual core will make a HUGE differance for supreme commander, although there are times when it can bring even my Q6600 with 8800GTX to it's knees. My second gaming rig is a socket 939 X2 4200+ at 2.6ghz with a 1900XTX and supreme commander runs pretty well on it as well. My X2 is one of the old original ones, the newer ones and the opterons tend to get better OC's, closer to 2.8-3ghz. I wouldn't invest a lot of money in a 939 dual core, but if you can find one reasonably priced, it will be a good hold you over upgrade until you are ready to build a new machine.

I just picked up a $58 X2 3800+ Toledo that runs 2.7GHz 1.375-1.4V. It will post at 3GHz but requires too much voltage for my tastes. Using an original lapped XP-90/AC AF9225 fan/AS5 the full load Orthos temps peak in the low 60C's according to CoreTemp 0.95.4 (which may or may not be reading the temp correctly). I have all of the fans in my P182 on low w/ an additional 120mm AC AF12025 fan in the top HDD bay. While everything is really quiet it seems like airflow is not as optimal as it could be. Regardless, I feel like this cpu is a tremendous value for us s939 owners who are holding out on a major upgrade for a little while longer. Don't forget to add the combo for the free Splinter Cell game. :)
