Should I upgrade my 1600 DDR3 memory

Hi, I currently have 4 x 2 (8GB) low voltage 1600 memory. I was wondering if it's worth upgrading to 16GB DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) memory. Newegg has a G.SKill 16GB memory kit for $119. I have a I7 2600K overclocked to 4.5 ghz. I primary used my desktop to play games and use VMs for work. Thank you.

Wait, everyone is saying no, but you mentioned VM in your OP. If you can benefit from the extra memory, I would go to 16GB. I know with 32GB in my system, I can game while having 6 or so VMs sitting in the background and have enough memory for the game. Typically OS + game = 4-5GB which doesn't leave much for more than 1-2 VMs.

Upgrading the AMOUNT of memory yes, but upgrading the speed...no not worth.

Which is why I'm scratching my head. The OP wanted to upgrade both capacity and speed. The speed wasn't worth it IMO, but doubling the amount could be beneficial. I was just shocked that so many shot it down without considering that more capacity could be a benefit.

What is your current memory (Brand/number)?
Maybe you could overclock it to 1866 or even 2133(doubtful) to see if you notice a difference.

I think everyone was thinking mostly about speed and perhaps missed the fact he was considering a larger amount...which for running VM's a larger amount would most certainly be helpful.

More capacity would help VMs. Speed above 1600mhz is not worth it IMHO.
