Hi there,

When considering gaming, networking and all around superiority for a power user, is it recommended to upgrade from Windows 2000 (Server) to Windows XP (Pro)?

What are your thoughts? I have XP right here and 2k Server is on here now -- should I upgrade?

Thanks! Happy Holidays!

are you using the server capabilities for anything? if so, then don't. actually, just stick with win2k, it works just as well and in some cases better than xp. xp is like win me.... a downgrade for $99

No, I'm not using the Server capabilities of 2k... it is pretty much tweaked out so it runs sa close to Pro as I can get it, in the services anyway...

I have about the same problem, but in my case i'm running W2K pro. To help me decide, I just make a new partition in my HD and install Xp Pro on that new partition. I will use both for about 2 weeks and then decide which one is better.

Since I'm building a new machine and I have XP home and pro from my MSDN subscription, I thought I'd get a little experience with XP on my existing PC. I did an upgrade of Win 2k and it screwed me up to the point that I had to do a clean install. Which means that all of my applications need to be reinstalled. I was going to wipe this PC anyway before passing it on, but the experience kind of soured me. Like someone here said recently, think of 2000 as NT5, 2000SP2 as NT5.1 and XP as NT5.2. There really isn't much to justify the expense of going from a stable 2000 to XP - you don't gain enough.

So my advice, FWIW, is new machine, go with XP, old machine with any working operating system that isn't causing you hassles or problems, then keep the old OS

I think that unless you're getting XP for free, there's no reason to go it over 2000. I have had nothing wrong with it, but it's not worth $100 or $200.

Athlon4all: I have XP sitting right here... the full Pro version; was given to me.

My 2000 install works unbelievably perfect... better than I ever thought Windows could ever do...

Just thjought i would add my 2 cents worth. If you're box is running smooth with no problems then don't do the upgrade. If you are experiencing problems then go ahead and upgrade, you have nothing to lose at that point. My experience over the past few years are (((Leave well enough alone))) If it isn't broken don't fix it.
