My experience on my two home computers has been good so far with some hesitations. I had W98SE on both before then tried the upgrade to the main box with ME after ghosting the old drive. Just a little bit of eye candy changes with it and some of the same issues I had with hardware from W98SE.
My other box went from W98SE to w2K to XP pro. That's been a huge difference and very steep learning curve but no blue screens since. I do get freezes and there's a lot I dont know about the OS and it's going to take me quite a while to figure out but it was the same with W98SE when I upgraded from 95.
run the compatibility wizard and follow the instructions...one of my older HP printers isn't working right although drivers are supposed to be native in XP for it
all installs were upgrades & my main system has an amd 1.5 & 512 ddr....the other has celeron 1.2 & 512
