Should I upgrade from W7 to W10?

I just noticed this 'time running out' thing.
I have the system in my sig, use it mainly to play BF4 these days. Everything seems to work well.
Will an upgrade be a good idea or not?

Well, in order to get DirectX 12 support, you "have" to upgrade to Windows 10.

Since you game, I would consider it. Since new games coming out are going to support DirectX 12, and it makes "Draw Calls" much more efficient, allowing greater detail, or greater performance, in games.

Edit: I don't see any .sig.

Looks like sigs have been removed from this forum. My computer was decent about three years ago when I upgraded it, not sure if windows 10 offers any advantages to it now:
B75M R2.0
i5-3550
8gb RAM
7870

Battlefield4 is actually the only game I play. May upgrade to the new Battlefield coming out. Not sure if my computer can handle it.
Rarely use my computer for anything else, and I strongly dislike the hassle of setting up a new computer, so really trying to stretchout my hardware as long as I can.

Sooner or later you would have to upgrade and then it will cost you few Hundreds.

Image your current Win 7 to an external drive or other Networked computer, upgrade it to Win 10.

Activated, then if it is not to your liking Re-Image back Win 7.

By doing so, if you change your mind later you can Install Win 10 (on the same computer), it will sense from MS' Activation Server the previous activation and would Activate the new Install.

Do it. Try it for 2-3 weeks. If you don't want it, revert back. If you like it, keep it and consider a clean install or a 'reset my PC' operation.

I'll confirm that what I did a year ago was upgrade and then hit the reset button - was a great way to do it without having to deal with any install media.

Ok. Is there anything special I should do before upgrading? I hate having to troubleshoot for months afterwards and try and track down drivers that may not exist etc.

I'd suggest using the media creation tool and download all available updates before proceeding with the upgrade to minimize any problems. It will allow you to create an iso or bootable thumb drive and go from there. Remember to use the UEFI version of the bootable device if you're doing an UEFI install of windows.

Just make sure you're all backed up. While Windows has been remarkably good about smooth upgrades and flawless downgrades back to 7 with no loss in data or apps, it's better to be extra safe.

Thanks guys. I just started the download. Is there any bloatware etc. I can get rid of? Does CC cleaner work to get rid of junk?

Thanks guys. The Download appears to keep locking up at 0%, waiting for up to an hour.
I tried the download tool link. It's seem to download it, but then says the installation failed and I should reboot. When I try to reboot it locks in installing update one of one mode also for up to an hour with no progress. It says not to power off the computer, but I had to. I was then able to restart the computer in normal mode.
Any ideas?

OK, I've downloaded the Tool twice and tried to install it when he gave me the option to install from this PC. In both cases it went through the initial "installation" process but then would hang up at the checking for updates phase. W10 was not installed, and I had to do a hard power off restart.
This is a bad omen.
I am currently 'creating it for another PC' option on the SD card. Is this like a fresh install? I don't have my windows product key anymore, will that cause problems? This is all making me uncomfortable.

I had to do x32 win 7 updates first
upgrade still would not updated ,as it would self reboot back into win 7 [after the win 10 download] until I downloaded and ran windows 10 upgrade assistant.
then it worked , 99% of all setting retained.
as in booted into desktop as a admin as it was set in win 7

issues :
-have to reset sli after stopping some services [time wrap back to pre 2010]

-and download drivers for a Samsung 1675 printer before I could print anything. win 10 did have drivers but just did not load them.

-also intel raid software is still MIA.

-had to turn down/off UAC

Seems to be working now via running ex from SD card. It's going through the legit install process. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Appears to have installed OK. It gave some error and choice to disable video drivers for some reason at startup.
I just tried to run battlefield 4, and it forced me to disable plug-ins, which refuse to let me join the game. So I changed the default browser to Internet explorer, from the default Edge. Now it's working.
So far seems to be ok. Let's hope nothing serious.
Anyway, thanks so much all for your help!

Edit: Forgot to add another bug, during install I had to refuse checking for updates, otherwise it would endlessly search.

Since the upgrade, my system volume is really low. I cranked all the volume settings, but I can still barely hear things like YouTube videos. Any idea how to fix this?

i had a similar issue with my Asus xonar soundcard, i think when i updated windows it used the old drivers from win7 that were already installed or something but as soon as i manually installed the newest win10 drivers from asus my sound level went back to normal. I disabled auto update of drivers as well.

If you run a xonar you might try the uni drivers for 10 which work really well with several models of asus cards. I'm using it with my xonar d2x and the sound is very good. If this card ever tanks I don't know what I'll do for sound.
