Hi, Everyone I have a Pentium D E5500 2.8 Ghz and a friend of mine is selling Core i3 540 which is 3.07 GHz. since there is not much difference in the clock speed of the both processors I want to know how much this upgrade would affect my FPS in games
I have HD7790 as my GPU
IS it worth the upgrade???

E5500 is not a "Pentium D" it's a Pentium Dual Core (Core 2 Duo with less l2 cache basically),

the i3 540 is faster, and if you overclock it even more, but it's also a little old...

you didn't mention what he is asking for the 540, or if you already have a 1156 motherboard (which can ben a little hard to find), so without this information I can't recommend buying it...

He is giving me the board as well, and as i live in pakistan so you wont be able to understand the amount. should i buy it?? Will it give me a performance increase?
And my second question is if you have Core 2 duo E8600 3.33 Ghz is it reasonable to upgrade to core i3 3220?? since both have almost same frequencies. Will it increase the performance in the games???
And lastly i wanna know does hyper threading help in gaming?

what you can tell me is how much less will it cost you compared to going with newer parts, let's say an i3 3220 + H61 board, or Athlon X4 750K (if you can find one), FX 6300 or something...

as for e8600 vs i3 3220, the i3 is clearly faster, it have higher single core performance and HT helps considerably for a few games.

this should give you an idea, even at 4GHz the e8xxx is still slower than the 322x (the 5 have a faster IGP, but for this test the IGP was disabled, so performance is the same to the 3220)

if it's a good upgrade, I don't know, normally I would say going from the e8600 to some i5 would make more sense, but...

now the i3 540 is not as fast, but it can be overclock a lot more (compared to the 3220), and the e5500 is significantly slower than the e8400 (1/3 of the l2 cache, which used to make a considerable difference, to match the e8400 stock performance you would need the 5500 working at around 600-700MHz more I think)

anyway, I think this represents well enough the e5500 (same cpu basically only the FSB is lower for the e5500) vs i3 540

not a huge gain, but I would expect the improvement to be better on newer games

okay thank you, Now im thinking to buy core i3 3220 Ive read its reviews and benchmarks. So tell me does it make sense to upgrade from E5500 to core i3 3220?? Will it be worth it? is it reasonable to go from e5500to 3220? or should i wait a couple of months and try to make some more money to buy a core I5 or 3220 would do??

If you are thinking about going IB, try to find a cheap i5. But if you think you will be with your 7790 for awhile, I guess the i3 IVB will be okay. CPU heavy games will definitely bottleneck the i3.
