Should I upgrade from a Dell U2711?

I have a Dell U2711.

I am thinking about a:

Samsung 46" LED EH6000 1080p 120Hz TV

My point is that I can't operate my stuff on my monitor from my bed. I don't really care about 1440p that much, I do care, but not as much as for the greater size.

A 46" TV is 3x the viewing area.

Is it worth it? What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Will gaming be smoother because of 120Hz?

Anything I should know if I have never used a monitor with a PC?

Nearly 10 ft away.

10ft away, then I would definitively consider a 46" 120Hz TV. Russian sensation uses a 37" TV to game on, and he is probably sitting closer than 10ft.

I am not sure if a 120Hz televsion is the same as a 120Mhz monitor? I would assume so, but not sure. With 120Hz you would probably only notice a difference in First person shooters and you wouldn't need to run Vsync either.

Downgrade.

You are increasing screen size while reducing viewable area. Viewing area is determined by resolution. At least that's how I look at it.

Unless its changed recently, TVs only accept up to 60hz input. They use software to simulate the extra frames for 120hz and up.

For me viewable area is the actual area overwhich my display is spread. And since I will be 8-10 ft away from the 46" display, the PPI will still be very good.

TVs don't have real 120hz inputs. You won't get 120hz refresh rates from a PC.

That and refresh rates are not always the actual refresh rate. Some 120Hz TV's are actually 60Hz with a scanning backlight. Some are actually 120Hz without a scanning backlight.

Its all very confusing. Which is why its good to just look at the picture before buying.

If I import from Amazon USA then it is $900 after taxes, import duty and shipping. Locally it is around double of that.

That doesn't make any sense. That is like saying "For me circumference is the actual half distance around a circle." And PPI does not change based on the distance you are from something. It becomes less noticeable the farther you are away, but that is not being very good.

Text will be very hard to read from 10 feet away, even on a 46". You'll have to increase text size in Windows (if that's what you're using), although this may be true regardless of how big the screen is.

But will the text be as clear as on a computer monitor or at least close to old computer monitors?

Yes and no.

I've tried using a 40" LCD TV at 1080p, from about 10 feet away. It's miserable. You really want to be no further than 5'. It'll be really clear once you're closer, but something about the distance didn't work for me.

I have narrowed down on Samsung 40EH5000. I will be able to get it for a little over $600 or so and my Dell U2711 will sell for close to $450+ or so. So not much to put in :)

Selling for 23k. Too much eye strain with web browsing regardless so settings/distance. Going back to my u2711. Gaming is good though, but not worth it as my primary purpose is email and surfing.

And btw, games are smoother and with less input lag on the tv than on the dell IPS.
