I have been considerinh upgrading my gpu along with the processor as well. But here is the problem, I do a lot of mult tasking in my pc so i am considering gettign a dual core processor. How si the pentium D line in everyone opinion? I am considering gettign the D line or going all the way to x2 3800. Whcih one should I get if I only got around 500-600 dollar to revamp my processor, mb, ram and gpu?

$500-600 for CPU?

Go Core2. If you dont feel like building, look on the hotdeals forum, complete (minus monitor) e6300 computer for $529.

I would suggest holding out for a couple more months, since Intel's Kentsfield (quadcore, 2x Core 2 Duo) is coming up pretty soon. They'll be better than any Pentium D. :)

Honestly, I was stuck with a Athlon 1400+, but I waited until native dualcore came out (too bad, I should've waited for native quadcore :().

Here's what I would do with $500-600, for an almost complete system build, assuming I wasn't a gamer:
1)X2 4200 processor- $185
2)Biostar Tforce 6100 motherboard- $69.99
3)2x1 GB Kingston HyperX RAM- $224.99
4)one of these two power supplies: Enermax Noisetaker II EG495P-VE- $84.99, or SeaSonic S12-430- $99.99

Both of those power supplies have more than enough power to power this system, and any video card you decide to add to the system later. That motherboard has pretty decent video onboard, unless you're a gamer, which you must not be, since you haven't mentioned a single game yet.

They have good encoding benchamrks... but run hot and suck up a lot of wattage, even at idle.

Another really cheap and powerful upgrade you might consider is to get an E6300 ($183 from Newegg) and an ASRock 775Dual-VSTA ($56 at Newegg) and you can re-use your old RAM and videocard. This would run you $239 for this combo and $283 if you went with a faster E6400.

I went with this combo and have been very pleased with the results. The ASRock board is not the best for overclocking but is very stable. I am able to run my E6400 at E6600 speeds giving me a cpu that is faster than a stock FX-62 for less than $300... hard to beat that value. :p

Nobody is answering his question completely, but perhaps we need more info on what the upgraded system will be used for. Gaming? Is the old RAM still decent for a socket 939 setup?

Nope, it won't slow it down and should work very well. This board works well with the old DDR RAM. Here is an interesting article by Gary Key of Anandtech that shows DDR vs. DDR2 on this exact board. link

The great thing about this motherboard as I see it is the ability to use all of your old parts (I'm using DDR and an AGP X850XT) and upgrade the separate components as I can afford it although right now I can see using my current system for at least 6 months to a year without any upgrades at all.

This board plus the E6400 is the best $300 upgrade I've ever made.

Xellos, I would definitely recommend you get an E6400: E6400 @zipzoomfly, and keep your 166/333 DDR RAM until Jan. or Feb., when RAM prices are always at their lowest. Then, I'd say get one of these video cards: 256MB PCI-E X1600 Pro @zipzoomfly, or 256MB PCI-E 7600GS @zipzoomfly.

I think you'd be much, much happier with the performance you got out of your system, with an E6400 and a decent PCI-E card, than to have DDR2, and a crappy video card, along with a slower processor.

edit: Just don't forget, you'll need a good, stable power supply to power that rig, even if you don't replace the video card yet.
