Should I update processor only or MoBoard too?

It's been so long (years) since I posted here that I forgot my username and password so I had to create a new one! :D

I'm looking to do a "best value" upgrade, hopefully not spending more than $400. I have a Dell Dimension 4300 with an Intel 1.2 GHz P4, 400 MHz 478 CPU. The Mboard limits me to 400 MHz P4's and 512 MB 168 pin SDRAM. My options are:

1. Purchase an Intel 2.8 GHz P4, 400 MHz 478 CPU; or,

2. Purchase a new MBoard and CPU.

What do you all recommend? Since I've been out of the hardware loop for awhile, if you think option 2, what would be a good mother board and processor?

Thanks! Once again I'm looking forward to your great responses!

Oakleaf,

I would suggest replacing the mobo and CPU but there are a number of other factors. RAM, video card, what you plan to do with the machine, etc.

I don't know what MOBOs will fit your machine. Dell has used standard parts but has also used special form factors for its boards so a replacement board may not fit.

Also, be aware that some Dell computers used a non-standard power supply which will not work on a non-Dell MOBO. They will plug in but they may fry your mobo and CPU. I think you have a standard power supply but you should check before doing an upgrade.

My recommendation if you are interested in gaming is to build a rig. If you just want a little more speed then add ram if you are not at the max. I moved from a Dell P3 866 machine to a P4 2.4 which I built so I don't know much about the early P4s.

You could build a bargin machine that would give you significantly better performance for $1000 (or less).

You could build a really supper machine for $2000.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks. I was unaware of Dell's use of non-standard parts. I need to update RAM too. I probably just go to a 2.8 GHz P4 400MHz and increase RAM to 512M for about $300.

Check out the For Sale forum on this board. You might be surprised what you could put together for $300.
