Should I unload my Voodoo5 5500 or wait it out??

I have a voodoo5 5500 and have been very happy with it. However, due to the recent developments at 3DFX I am beginning to worry that it will become obsolete fast. I have had nothing but bad experiences in the past with NVIDIA cards but will get one if that is my only option in the future for 3d gaming. Any suggestions?

There's your answer.
When you're no longer happy with it, replace it.
It's that simple.

Im keeping mine and will buy more if the price drops.

3DFX is not obsolete. The newest driver updates added features for the most part. Compatibility rarely rears it's ugly head in the Voodoo world. Nvidia NEEDS driver updates as haste makes waste...

I think it's laughable that some even EXPECT driver updates every month. Well written drivers just might get tweaked a bit, but Nvidea has used updates just to have the apperance of doing something.

I remember Nvidea drivers written to skip frames so as to fool certain testers by sheer framerates...

Keep it, like BFG10K says, you like it, you keep it. Keep it till you dislike it.

Answer was in your own post ;)

There is no reason to not keep it, especially if you are very happy with it. Just because 3dfx closed doesn't mean anything. The current drivers are excellent, and even so, there still may be more through x3dfx. So don't worry about anything, just keep the Voodoo5.

I am keeping mine. I have previously owned a Radeon and a Herclules GTS2 Pro and I like the Voodoo5 better. I think all this talk about lack of support doesn't amount to much anyways. If I had a problem with a game I wouldn't look towards new drivers to fix it ...I would look for the newest patch from the software company. That is generally where the fixes occur. The obsolete argument doesn't make much sense ...I think I'll wait for a G800
There are soooo many headaches with Radeon's and GeForce cards with new motherboards it is almost comical. At least with a V5 you can rule out your vidcard as the source of the problem.

Definelty keep it in your PC & get your moneys worth no point in changing the card until you really need to,

just to let you know I`m a hardcore gamer that switched form Voodoo1 to Nvidia (TNT,Geforce2 MX) & I`ve never had any problems with my drivers or games in ALL the years I`ve been using them.

Thanks for all the posts guys. I think I will keep it since I do love it so much. My only concern was that as NEW software comes out that if there is no support from 3DFX (eg. new drivers) that I will not be able to play newer games.

I have feeling that video games will continue to support 3dfx cards for at least another year or two. You have a build a game to run the system that people actually have and there's a lot a Voodoo's out there. Voodoo gamers may actually be able to prolong video game support by adamantly holding onto their cards.

Obviously, when DX9 games appear there may be problems buuutttt...honestly, I don't see too many gamers holding on THAT long.

I still really think that Mosaic/GP technology will surafce from nVIDIA in year or two...the technology is just too good to throw in the crapper.

Hey MagnumCWN, I was just wondering how you went about overclocking your rig. I have the Athlon t-bird800 with the asus av7. did you do it with the multiplier or o/c the bus. just curious. thanks!

I did it with the multiplier (10x100); however, I was not able to do it that way until I purchased my Kingmax PC150 TinyBGM memory. When I had generic PC133 ram it wouldnt go above 900 without lockups.

Well I agree with RacerX. I sold my v5, then got a mx card and it was just slow. So I decided to get a radeon 32 meg ddr and that thing was just so slow in sports games, not to mention that it had incompatabilites with madden 2001, So then I decided to get a card that had all sorts of praise, ( hercules gforce pro) and had nothing but incompatability with my motherboard. After 3 weeks of suffering I traded the pro for another v5. Got it back and everthing is back to normal. I have never been impressed with nvidia cards. But I always like to try everything that comes out. Seems I always go back to the voodoo cards for compatability. Seems to me that in the next batch of video cards that I might be going to the xbox unless nvidia use's some of 3dfx patients they bought. Fsaa on the gforce and radeon line are a joke if you ask me,(I did find out that the drivers I used there was bug on radeon that fsaa was not working for some reason) and as for t&l I have tried games that use it with it on and off and not to impressed.Maybe its time to get rid of this old athlon when new video cards start to arrive and get a new setup. Just have to wait and see.
