Save that tip and give it to someone that actually relies on tips to survive. UPS drivers make quite enough money already.

But he does good by me and delivers my packages when I'm home for lunch. When I'm not home, he'll hide them on my stoop so that they're out of the way of rain.

Which is his job. A tip should be something you give to somebody who does something really out of the way. If the UPS man helped you carry your package up your stairs, that would be worthy of a tip.

Agreed. If they're hiding your packages for safety, that's just a good way to do business - just don't make it miserable for them, such as having leaves piled up. Carrying a package up the stairs with you is unlikely to be in their job description though, that's extra help they choose to give you.

Slightly off topic: during the holiday season, some UPS guy gets dropped off at the top of my street with a bicycle and a large yard cart of packages, and pedals the whole way down the street emptying the cart.

A waitress bringing me my food is just doing her job as well but I still tip her.

OP, if you like the service the UPS guy has given you then by all means give him a tip. The amount depends on a lot of things including your financial situation.

That's asinine. Waiting tables is a gratuity-based job. Driving a truck and walking packages to the door is not. I'll be dammed if I'm going to tip a union worker, too.

I don't care if they are union or not. I have learned that coming out of pocket a few bucks that I will not miss gets me better service in the future. If those few dollars are going to hurt your financial situation then of course, I can see your issue. I, on the other hand, will not miss the couple of bucks and have no problem rewarding someone for going above and beyond with a small gratuity.

WTF better level of service can a UPS guy give you?

Well, if you want your 8800GT to be thrown like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS3y1WzPbyc

Maybe thats the answer to anandtech's recent article about all the 8800gt breaking?

I avoid using UPS & the only "tip" I have that involves them is to ship with sombody else! :p

This would be a good idea. Shows your appreciation without getting the UPS guy in the mind set of "Will I get tipped today?" or "WTF - that was great service and he didn't tip me this time?!"

LOL really? The people I know that work at UPS work their asses off (normally 10 hours a day 5-6 days a week) and get $16/hour. That's $42k a year (if we say 50 hours a week). That's not rich in my book.

I will never tip a mail delivery person, ever. I have given them some food in the past though.

Yes, really. They make quite enough. From here...

"UPS drivers make an average of $75,000 a year, plus an average of $20,000 in health-care benefits and pension"

He can avoid stomping the shit out your package.

I would say that's pretty good for a job that doesn't require a college education.

Doesn't mean it's easy to get though.

My uncle's a driver for a small shipping company and he makes around 40k a year... working an average of 25 hrs per week. Talk about the perfect part-time job. But, it took him 15 years of ass-busting to get it.

Getting my crap to me on time, arriving at relatively the same time each delivery, hiding my stuff if I am not home instead of leaving it in plain view, etc..

If I am not home for a delivery that requires a signature my UPS guy actually calls me on my cell to see if I will be home when he will be passing my area on his way back to the "depot". I would say that is $20 well spent (plus a few cold drinks/snacks here and there).

I also tip my trash guys and they have grabbed my trash can from the side of the house on occasions when I forgot to pull it to the road. All of you scrooges would be surprised what something as small as a few bucks or a six pack will get you. Hell, this is ATOT, all of you guys make at least half a mil. a year, drive $200K cars, live in $3 mil. estates and have 12" schlongs yet you are to cheap to spot your delivery guy a few bucks?

For the most part, UPS drivers are Teamsters and make pretty decent wages. (IIRC, Each state/metro area has its own wage package) This is not the kind of job where I personally would consider tipping, but if you REALLY want to, then it's OK...but then again, why not tip EVERYONE? You know, the person who reads your gas/electric meter, your mailperson, the cops who gave you a speeding ticket last week, etc...

We do give our newspaper delivery person a nice tip at X-mas, but we get service above and beyond the normal. (we both have mobility issues, so they get out of their car, walk the paper to the porch, and hang it on the door knob every morning. (we're on a "motor route" where the delivery person drives a car and throws the paper into your driveway, under your car, in the bushes, on top of your house, etc.)
While most of us would expect having the newspaper "porched" is a normal delivery, on a motor route, if it's in the driveway, that's considered good. WE usually give an extra $20 or so as a thanks for the extra service.
Other than that, we don't tip/gift any service person for doing their job.

My neighbor is a UPS driver...its like the "king" of truck driving/delivery jobs. They get paid something more like 60-70 from what I hear, to drive a truck! Locally even, these aren't the guys that go out and drive for weeks at a time. Rich? No. Doing quite fine? Oh yes.

Tipping has gotten out of control.
He should tip you for keeping him employed.

OP - if you feel like he deserves a tip for providing you good service, twenty bucks should be fine. I'd tip him the same as if he was the mailman or newspaper delivery guy.

My dad was a driver for 30 years. He received Christmas gifts every year. They usually included baked goods, candy, Hickory Farms boxes, etc.

Postal Carriers are union and well-paid. Why do they deserve a tip?

Again, just doing his job. My UPS / FEDEX guy does the same damn thing, I don't feel I should tip them. UPS and FEDEX are in the business of delivering packages intact and on time to their customers, thereby keeping said customers happy. Not to mention that unless you make 6 figures, your UPS driver probably makes more annually than you do.
