Should I tip my UPS man?

I receive packages from him at least a few times a month and even more so at this time of year. If you think I should tip him, what should I give him?

Gift certificate to a local restaurant or store or just cash? And how much?

My sister works for Fed-Ex and she tells me holiday tips are very rare.

But he does good by me and delivers my packages when I'm home for lunch. When I'm not home, he'll hide them on my stoop so that they're out of the way of rain.

A waitress bringing me my food is just doing her job as well but I still tip her.

OP, if you like the service the UPS guy has given you then by all means give him a tip. The amount depends on a lot of things including your financial situation.

Which is his job. A tip should be something you give to somebody who does something really out of the way. If the UPS man helped you carry your package up your stairs, that would be worthy of a tip.

Well shit, I'll tell my dad he should start expecting tips from the melt shop guys. "Great job rebricking the furnace, we didn't melt through. Here's $20."

Very nice of him to do that, but UPS delivery drivers make VERY good money to do their jobs. I was shocked to find out what my own delivery person (girl) made. I'm sure tips are welcome, but UPS pays their drivers enough for their jobs, unlike people in other service industries for whom tips are absolutely necessary for survival.

People generally tip service industry workers when they do a good-exceptional job. Perhaps daddy isn't doing a good enough job to warrant a tip?

Hell, my roofers get tipped sometimes when they go above and beyond.

That's asinine. Waiting tables is a gratuity-based job. Driving a truck and walking packages to the door is not. I'll be dammed if I'm going to tip a union worker, too.

I don't care if they are union or not. I have learned that coming out of pocket a few bucks that I will not miss gets me better service in the future. If those few dollars are going to hurt your financial situation then of course, I can see your issue. I, on the other hand, will not miss the couple of bucks and have no problem rewarding someone for going above and beyond with a small gratuity.

Next time when he comes, just offer him a nice cold bottle of water?
That's usually nice gesture enough.

Can you afford it? Would it make you happy to know you did something that made the UPS guy happy? If so, tip him. It doesn't matter what any of us think, as long as you think it's a nice idea and you'd like to do it.

Personally, I would, because if I were doing a job like that it'd be nice to know it's appreciated. Even if it's my job to do it.

I never see my mail lady. Not to mention I hate junk mail. She should give me money as far as I'm concerned. :|

I think what would be better for him is calling his boss and telling him what a good job he does.

man, what a bunch of grinches here. where's the christmas spirit?! OP, if you feel like spreading some christmas love to the UPS man, go ahead. nothing wrong with it. the thing is, you don't have to but it's a nice gesture. as for what, rather than money, i think some type of gift/treat would be much better served (i.e. some candy, movie ticket).

Your waitress is on a wage that dictates a tip to complete it...UPS controls the wages they make and they are pretty damn good for the level of job that is.

Personally I avoid UPS...I have been shipping large and high 4 figure to 5 figure items A LOT for many years. UPS will, no matter how much padding and a double box, find a way to destroy my items about 50% of the time.

I have had two problems with FedEx and both were paid quickly.

WTF better level of service can a UPS guy give you?

Honestly, If i got as many packages as you, and he really does leave things under the stoop, I would just get him some $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant. I mean, it's not the amount, but the thought. It will probably put you on his good side, and most likely your packages will be a little better off....

Well, the packages are already left in a good manner. I was just really wondering if people actually left their UPS guys a tip and, if they did, what they left them.

I leave an occasional tip for anyone who does exceptional work for me on a regular basis ... for example I throw my Fedex driver a few bucks in an X'mas card every year around mid-december.

I avoid using UPS & the only "tip" I have that involves them is to ship with sombody else! :p
