Yes. One of my sisters is a "stylist", and this is how they make most of their money. If the hair cut is good, I'll tip 20% or more, otherwise I do 15%. However if it's my sister, I'll tip her really well, because she cuts my hair for free...

I tip for any kind of service.
If you are eating out and have to order the food at a counter or pick it up yourself(McDonalds, Pizza shop, coffee shop), no tip.
If you are eating out and you get an order taken and brought to you, then you tip.
Same goes for any service such as a hair cut.

Keep in mind if the service is bad, you don't have to tip. A tip is for doing a job to at least satisfaction. :)

I think tipping is overrated. I often tip, but I won't if the service is bad. Lately I've never been tipping at bars. Remember the argument in Reservoir Dogs about tipping? I totally agree with that.

The only reason we do it is because it is socially accepted. We never even think about "why" we're tipping. In a lot of other countries, tips aren't even accepted.

I was in London and I left a tip on the bar, and the bartender came over to my table to return it to me. :Q

Pub owners in GB don't like to get tips...they consider insulting sometimes.

I always tip the barber like $5. Then again, he's $5 cheaper than the other area barbers. Smart guy :)

You should tip based on service. Although a low tip provides a better message than no tip at all. If you leave no tip, your server will think you're a punk but won't know for sure if you were really dissatisfied or if you just plain forgot.

In regards to haircuts, I never used to tip, I never realized it was customary. In the past few years, I've taken to tipping a bit (usually if it's on a CC receipt, makes things too easy). I do hate it when I go someplace to get a haircut and mistakenly assume that I'd be paying $10 for a trim. I get the bill for $30 and just about mess my drawers. ;) There's not much chance I'll tip (much, if any) on that.

There are some states that can hire someone at less than minimum wage (I've heard $2.70 or so/hr). They're banking on the custom of tipping 10% or more. Often times servers are taxed on 10% regardless of what they actually receive in tips. Leaving a tiny (or no) tip cuts deep into the wage. Add to the that the places that require servers to "tip out" (share the tips) with the bussers, salad preppers, cooks, hosts/hostesses, and you can see one of the problems. Tipping is largely misunderstood.

And while I'm on it, I feel for the servers. If you didn't enjoy your experience, the best way would be to speak with a manager, not leave the "penny" tip or something like that. There is a good chance that whatever inconvenience you experienced was caused by miscommunication. There may have been a trainee cook that had to recook the meal, all sorts of things. If it happens to be in a state where the guy/gal is making $4/hr + tips and he busts his/her ass serving you for an hour but you don't feel you got what you deserved, a nonexistant tip is just cold. It's intended to say "Hah, didn't like your service, so no dough for you". It comes across as "I'm a cheap bastard." ;)

Woah... was starting to ramble. I think I hear an exit calling.

yes you should, unless they make the haircut is bad, in which case you should pitch a fit until they give you money

I always tip 2 dollars for a 10-12 dollar haircut. but i'm really not a greedy man, i love to help peeps out. They get paid more than minimum wage though, so don't feel too bad if you don't. ALWAYS tip watress/waiters, and pizza guys. They get paid sh!t from the boss. I've been a waiter and it sucks, so tip them.

If you get a good cut, yes. If you want that to continue with the same cutter, it helps a lot. :)

my friend who works for an indian casino (sycuan) makes more money off of her tips in one day than her weekly wage. she gets tipped maybe $400 a day and makes that in a week from wage. since they have no idea what tips she makes, they automatically deduct 4% from her wage for taxes. heh, if they only knew.

BTW, she is a change cashier for all of you who want to pursue a job like that.

Yes, people in Canada tip - as much as the US.
No, it is not common to tip a delivery guy. I definitely don't tip the Fedex guy for bringing me a package - that's his job.
