Should I take Wine Appreciation in school?

I'm signing up for next years classes now. I can take wine appreciation for 3 credits, yet I am unsure if I should. It's supposed to be really hard, but I plan on doing it pass/fail and changing it to a grade if and only if I will get an A. It only meets on Monday night from 6:30-9:30 or something like that.

Just wondering if I should take it or not.

I would say yes....wine is a wonderful thing. Not to mention you will then be armed with knowledge so that you'll be able to pick out good wine that doesn't cost an arm + leg in the future instead of being at the mercy of whoever is selling the wine to you. Kinda like going to the auto repair guy knowing nothing about cars.;)

:confused: <---pretty much sums it up. Friend of mine took it, said it was a great class, of course he worked at a winery.

What exactly could be "hard" about this class?

Do you have to learn about different types of grapes? First one to puke fails?

Yes. THen you wouldn't have to be like me who thinks that spending $30 on 750 mls of fluids is a sick and offensive waste of money. I don't know/care about the taste of wine at all but I almost wish I did.

I would recommend it. I wish my school offered a course in it. I always feel like a dumbass ordering wine at dinner. If I only new little bit more. Knowledge of wine is a great social skill to have.

Hehe...I didn't really get into wine until I started dating my wife years ago. Her grandmother is extremely knowledgeable and would serve these amazing wines with dinner at their house whenever we were in town. I decided to learn about it as well, being the naturally curious bio-geek that I am. I've almost considered getting an MV (master's viticulture) and trying to find work in the wine industry.

BTW, it's the biological/chemical aspect of making wine that will likely account for the "hard" rating of this class. It's easy to make wine (grape juice + yeast + time = wine), but making really good wine is a truly sublime thing....although I won't spend more than $20ish unless it's a very special occasion. There's kind of a point of diminishing returns beyond a certain price and you sure won't ever catch me shelling out $2000 for a bottle of '65 Petrus or anything like that.;)

UM.... I Always beed pretty happy with....

Ripple and Mogan David, and some of the other under $5.00 a bottle stuff

I am taking that exact class in the spring. It is a really hard class, but you learn a lot from what I have heard.

It is a food science class, but it is not required by any major that I know of. It is really just an elective.

Huh?? Why do people ask advice on matters of such underwhelming complexity and subjective dependence? What else are people going to say?

Pro: "Sure? Wine is cool, and it helps to know something about it."

Con: "Nah, I don't care for wine, isn't there an archery course available?"

This is a 'discussion' you cannot play-out in your own head? Do you need people to give you advice on whether you should get up in the morning or stay in bed? Are you paralyzed by such vexing questions as "Paper or Plastic"?

Why not?

If you were to take the class elswhere it'd be expensive.

It still makes you look more dignified though.

I'd take it if I could

I would take it only if they didn't offer "Beer Brewing 101".

If they don't have BB101, then go for it!

lets see, go to class, get to learn something that might be useful in life....sure, why not? and besides, chicks like guys that know their wine

remember the ladies man guide to wine:
cork, no screw top
nice label. no dogs plaing poker
i forget the third one

I see you're going to Purdue GermyBoy. I took wine apreciation my last semester at Purdue, and let me say it's a great class. It's not incredibly hard, there is alot of history behind wine and how it is produced, but I didn't find the tests too terribly difficult. It was mostly jsut memorization. Atleast compared to my ChE courses, it was alot of fun.

Since you'd take it pass fail, I say go ahead and take it. I really learned quite a bit, and it really impresses the women when you can speak intelligently about wine. If you've got any other questions, about the course, let me know.

I have friends who would pay good money to have an excuse to get drunk in class...actually they usually are regardless, but hey, its college..
