Should I take this job? **UPDATED**

Hi everyone.

I'm graduating this December and as you can guess I'm frantically searching for a real job to take on after I'm outta here. I was a Computer Science major but changed it to a minor and made General Business my major 2 years ago ( I don't want to be a programmer for the rest of my life  ) And I've decided to take on the world of management (hard to do when I have experience only in web design). I don't know where I see myself in 5 years so I guess you can say I'm open to anything.

Now heres the dilemma. After a set of good interviews, a major grocery chain (Save A Lot) is offering me a 34k/yr Assistant Store Manager position and I have to give them a yes or no by Friday.

Should I accept the job as a good foot in the door or should I try for better?

(Heres a watered-down version of my resume: Link )

Any and all advice appreciated

*********Update**********

I recently accepted the job and they say I'll begin training January 10th (about a month after graduation).

The head manager of the store (not an a$$hole) works about 8-9 hours a day and the two co-managers work similar shifts so it doesn't look like I'll be working super-crazy hours. I haven't signed anything yet but my mom suggests I get everything in writing before I agree to anything else (solid advice).

New Question though: When everyone says "Accept the job and keep looking" whats the proper etiquite for telling them "I know I accepted the job but I found a better one so goodbye" if I discover a better opportunity in my job hunt? Personally I think it's really rude doing such but when even my mother is pushing same advice, I guess I should consider it.

It's not a bad place to start. You'll definitely learn the management ropes, that is if the store manager isn't a tool.

Do it.

You may find it is more difficult than you think to find a job that you really want. This will tie you over. Plus you could always advance if you wanted.

I think I'll continue educating myself in Web Design after hours just in case but the lack of IT in this job is a bit worrying. Thanks for the feedback

I disagree with most people here. I wouldn't step into retail. Reasons? Plenty: bitching customers, very very long hours (80 hours a week maybe? don't believe what the recruiter says. they'll say 40 but it will double that) and lots of other stuff to deal with. Unless you love retail, I'd stay away from it. It will be hard to look for another job when you're in retail. Trust me, it consumes you and your time.

My son is getting 34K as an assistant produce manager at Publix. I believe the produce managers in publix make 55K+. Sounds like your working for the wrong grocery chain.

Ah, thanks for bringing that up. I'm not much of a retail fan either and working unconventional hours would make the pay look less outstanding. The recruiter said that I get some sort of bonus for every hour I work beyond 40 hours. I should probably ask how that works. thank you

Save A Lots are a bunch smaller than publix but I think management-wise theres asst. manager, then co-manager, then manager (I think 5 or so managers per building total) and we share pretty much all of the management duties. I looked up on Salary.com the median salary for an retail Assistant Manager for my region (Gainesville, FL) and it gave $30,000 so as far as I can tell, I don't think I'm getting ripped off.

I'm truly apprecieating all this feedback. If you know anything else about the industry or have any advice, please post. This is my first real job offer and I'm trying my hardest to not make a poor decision. keep posting :)

Since you've some background in IT, you should look into consulting firms. Seriously. My friend toekramp graduated with an English degree from VT but he had a very deep IT background so he found a great IT consulting job in no time. He switched jobs since then due to marriage relocation but he now found a better IT job :D

Accept and keep looking. I may end up doing the same when I graduate school. I have worked in the retail business for 4 years and it pretty much sucks.

If you don't already have a better job, then why not?

you can always apply at other places and look for something better ....

Got to start somewhere. Anyhow stick with it for 6 months and look for another job. I would hesitate looking for a job too soon because it may look bad later one to jump from one job to another in a few weeks.
