a family member of mine told me this... he yelled and this guy, who's head was over the fence and latched on the fence on the otherside so as to climb over, ran for it and disappeared...

burglary attempt?

should i call the cops so there is a report of my occurence?

Why are you thinking about calling the police when this happened to your family member? Or is the family member at your house and telling you about something he saw there?

In any case strangers scaling your fences warrants a call I'd say, even if it's just to have them send a patrol car down your street.

id keep a lookout for him to coem back...also see if there was anything easy to steal in the area near where he was trying to climb over..
 
What's on the other side of the fence? A public area, or a neighbor's yard?
If it is the latter, contact that neighbor and let them know what you saw, and that you called the police.

A) It is most likely it was somebody living there or familiar with the neighbors.
B) they will ask questions of the kids, etc, and they will be on notice that the cops are involved(even if the are not).
C) it was not somebody from that house, and the neighbor deserves to know that prowlers are going through their yard.
 
Well, I had similar things happen. Calling the police doesn't help..

Just buy a gun, and if you see them again, show it. I bought a replica AK-47 and it works perfect..

Flashing a gun without intending to use it is a great way to get killed or arrested.

yep i know calling won't 'immediately' help, that is, equate to having nice patrol cars around for the next 90 days... but calling could? add to other reports in the area of some shiet goin on...

Believe me, they never come around. After my mom called in, I still haven't seen a police car around here. I live in a pretty small town, so I doubt they have other things to do..
 
Next time your "family member" sees this person, let them in the yard and whip out the old 12 gauge and shoot it into the ground, or use an airsoft/paintball gun and shoot them. Before my parents and I moved out into our current house, there were lots of thefts in the area. If I saw anyone suspicious walking on our lawn, Id pull out the ol'painty and color my lawn a little.
 
Take a bunch of nails and drive them into the top of your fence every few inches then cut off the heads with a set of diagonal cutters. Presto, no more people trying to climb over your fence.

However you might want to post a sign warning of this deterrent as well, or get a good lawyer. 😉

I rented a house one time where that had been done. I never got any notice that it WAS illegal and it had been that way for a LONG time before I moved in. You might want to check with your local police though just to make sure as laws like that are likely to be different from place to place.
