Should I stick with CRT or move to LCD

I currently have 21 inch NEC monitor and I love it, but it's a monster. I do play alot of games, but with my current setup I can't enjoy 1600 X 1200 resolutions anymore on the newer games (F.E.A.R). I'm looking to build a new computer, AMD X2 4800, and a 7800 GTX. I was wanting to buy the Viewsonic VP930, but since I'm used to my current monitor I was wondering if I would still enjoy surfing and gaming by downgrading (so to speak) to an LCD. I'm just asking for opinions or suggestions. I know I have a great, but huge, monitor now, and the Viewsonic monitor is probably one of the best 19 inch LCD's around.

You'll find that once you go LCD (as long as you buy a quality one), that you'll never want to go back to CRT.

Or you may find that there is no such thing as a quality LCD for you- that the crap being pushed on the market like Dell's 200X series are really just nauseating junk that become intollerable after fairly short periods of time. My advice to you would be to try one out for a while before you make a choice. I have three LCDs in the house- one Sony two Dells(they are not allowed near my rig :) ) CRT is still superior by a fairly sickening amount unless you are very lax about your standards. OLED is coming to make things better soon enough.

From what you are talking about (gaming), you don't have anything to gain by going LCD. You will lose significant resolution flexibility, response time, and contrast.

Errr... CRTs are much better because you own 3 fairly bad LCDs (I am assuming the dells are 2001s) and a very good CRT?

There are alot of things to recommend LCDs such as silent operation, instant on, much better geometry and significantly less eyestrain. For certain uses, its laughable how much better LCDs are compared to CRTs.

Silent operation? Huh? Last time I checked, my CRT was silent. CRT eyestrain depends on the user, as I have never had any issues with eyestrain on any of the CRTs I've used, provided the refresh rate was above 75hz.

Depends on your uses. LCD is (still) better for office/work uses, while the CRT is better for graphics and gaming purposes. Plus, if you game a lot, you can run into ghosting, the horrible dead pixel plague, and then you have to upgrade your video card, or do scaling/sacrificing quality.

your right. I usually need 85. Eyestrain is dependant on model. But LCDs produce significantly less eyestrain on average.

CRTs make tons of noises. If you are sensitive to it.
Ever been in a room with like 20-40 of them?

Note: I am not saying LCDs are superior or better for the OP. I am saying that in certain situations LCDs are better for the end user. CRTs aren't the dominate solution suggested by Ben's comment.

Well get this - today at work I just got my 19in CRT replaced with a dell 2001fp, and I miss the CRT already. I dont know why everyone seems to be so excited about LCD's, but I got some major qualms with LCD:

1) I tried running at the native resolution of 1600x1200, but everything was too small for my liking, the text was hard to read. I tried turning the ClearType feature on and off, and it still looked hard to read.

2) I set the resoluton to a more comfortable 1028x1024, and while it's easier to read stuff, the text quality plain sux. I have blurry text edges, and even the letters themselves are not of uniform thickness - some parts of a letter are darker than other parts. Also, the letter spacing/width seems to be affected, becasue not the words looked squished horizontally compared to the CRT.

3) Immediately without even having a CRT next to me I can tell that the colors are different. They just seem washed out compared to the CRT, and yes I adjusted the contrast and brightness, but it still looks different.

I'm definitely not getting an LCD for my home machine, I never like the older LCD's I tried, and with this 2001fp, I still dont like em. But hey, at least I managed to get one without dead pixels. :p

Problem is finding a good CRT these days but I agree a *high end* CRT beats any current LCD on the market if your priority is image quality.

I recently bought a 24" Sony GDM-FW900 CRT and it destroys my previous LCD in image quality and its great having TRUE black levels again.

Some pics ive taken off the monitor with my digicam here , of course it looks better in person.

monster? I picked up a 32" mitsubishi CRT display monitor for free 2 years ago from a company (a bank named Gateway?) that was closing down... it weighs about about 200lbs and it has the funny RGB hookups.

the catch? I now have a 200lb 32" monitor that has a maximum resolution of 800x600 and max refresh rate of 60hz.

it all depends,...if your gonna grab a crappy lcd over a good crt then no dont do it,...but if your gettin an lcd with a true 8ms response time @85hz in its native res with DVI then why not sure go lcd like this,...

ViewSonic Widescreen LCD 8ms 19" DVI

i myself just cant let go of my crt 1280x1024@85hz and 1600x1200@75hz,...plus i like being able to clean the screen often(i smoke so i have to wipe things(electronic's monitor's,..the hdtv, pc towers etc etc) down every other day

I'd get a 20", I think the pixels are too large on 19" monitors. 20" would carry a res of 1600x1200.

Did you even try increasing the font size? The DPI size?

I'd keep the CRT. I have a 21" IBM Trinitron based monitor and I won't give it up until it dies.

Went from a 21" Sony G520 to a 20" Dell 2005 FPW LCD and don't regret it one bit. The damn CRT weighed 90 lbs and made my glass table buckle. Furthermore, I don't really see much difference in gaming since the response time on this particular LCD monitor is great. Text and colors are more vibrant on an LCD as well.

I went back from a Dell 2001fp (2 actually) to a Trinitron CRT. :p

Turn up the dpi setting to compensate for the high resolution.
Do this by going to display settings, and going to advanced. The first tab will allow you to adjust the DPI

I still use my 21" Rasterops (Hitachi) and 19" Dell (Sony Trinitron) CRTs. But I also use 2 Samsung and 1 Sony LCDs because of the long hours I spend working with them. The LCDs are definitely easier on the eyes if you're are on 6+ hrs per day. CRTs have a definite use but the new LCDs are convenient and with the newer refresh rates are what's happening.
