title says it all. although the 4850/4870 are excellent deals right now, i'd prefer to stay with nvidia/evga because of my step up thats all. i have the option to step up to a 9800GX2, 260, or 280. 260 sounds like a better deal because it'll only be $50-$100 total for me to step up and i wont have to change out my psu (ill need an 2x8 pins to power the GX2 and 280) for a higher wattage model.

i hear that there is a gtx 290 coming out, so then the 280 will drop to around $450 and the 260 will become $300. true?

so should i step-up or not?

thanks all!

The 260 doesn't sound like a bad option as that's probably how much you would have to spend for a 4870 (sell 9800 for $200, $100 out of pocket ). It really depends how much you paid for the 9800GTX but with step-up there's not much point to wait as their step-up MSRP never comes down.

oh i gotcha...but with the 9800GTX+ and possibly the GTX 290 coming out soon, its best to wait? i havent seen any reviews/previews on the 9800GTX+, or let alone ANY info on the 290 (i read it somewhere).

never mind...read those 3 9800GTX+ reviews, looks like a cut down GT200 card. might as well step up to the 260.

9800 GTX+ review thread

I'd step up to a 260, 280 or GX2 myself, though the GX2 might be a problem if the step-up price is still $500 instead of the real-world price of ~$400.

The 9800 GTX+ is a pointless step up for you, <10% difference isn't worth the effort.

I would wait until near the end of your window to see if MSRP has dropped on the GX2, 260, 280 (since all need to drop at least $100 to compete)

There is not much point in waiting for prices on the GTX 260/280 to drop with a step-up. EVGA generally keeps the prices of the cards at MSRP, even when they drop considerably on newegg. Case in point, EVGA 9800GX2 on newegg: $479.99; EVGA 9800GX2 at evga.com: $569.99. Also take note of the fact that 9800GTXes on evga.com are still $350+, even though NV changed the MSRP to $200. I think EVGA does this so they don't compete with companies like newegg, plus it lets them recoup some of their losses on step-ups.

That being said, $50-100 to step-up to a GTX 260 is a good deal. I'd definitely do it if I was in your shoes.

65 days left? why don't you wait another 60 days and then step up? nvidia might have the 55nm GTX 260 out by then...

True, but given 2 months there's a chance MSRP will drop too.

Nvidia knows the pricing on the GX2 & GTX cards is far too high for their performance against the 4850 & 4870. I'd expect them to drop MSRP once they sell the first wave to suckers and rabid fanboys who will pay any price and who ignore all of the benchmarks.

Of course I'm guessing like everyone else, but it makes sense.

nvidia dropped the MSRP on the 9800GTX by 100$ the day after the 4850 was released.. Although eVGA is notorious for NOT dropping their own MSRP (they list the 8800GT at 230$ MSRP right now!)
http://www.evga.com/products/m...%208%20Series%20Family

Those are going for 130-150$ online... and they list them as 230$... the MSRP nvidia set on the 9800GTX+...

So yea, you got VERY lucky if you actually have a useful step up...
But anyways, you might get luckier with a 55nm GTX260+

I think its a good upgrade to a GTX260, seeing as these cards OC pretty well enough to almost reach GTX280 performance. But i think waiting could be another option. New cards, along with price drops could be on the way since nVIDIA doesn't like to sit idle as usual.

well looks like the official GTX 260 price on evga is now $329.99...now should i jump for it or wait further for a possible GTX 260+?
