should I sign up for BMG?

hmm? and what exactly do I have to do to avoid getting ripped off after getting the 12 cds for the price of 1 (plus shipping of course). would columbia house be a better choice? or do they both suck?
 
I'm curious about this myself, especially since I've got a boatload of CDs to replace. Can't believe they got stolen out of my truck the day I wrecked it :|

EDIT: if neither of these are good, where are some good places to look? Are CDs any cheaper online than at someplace like Bestbuy, Circuitcity, etc?

I've signed up with BMG, and I finished my commitment in less than a month. Just make sure to check the site once a month to make sure that they don't send you the selection of the month. I spent a total of about $50 for 12... On top of that, I've gotten my mom and another friend to sign up and I've gotten free CDs.

IMHO, Columbia House blows. They require you to buy between 4-6 CDs after you get the 12 cheap ones.

 
Ive done BMG about 6 times now, never had any problems.... Im actually thinkin i might dive in again...

They send you an email every month, and all you do is click on the link to say "No I don't want this." It couldn't be easier. BMG's selection isn't huge, you won't find incredibly rare stuff, but its definitely cheap. They don't even really care if you sign up 5 or 10 times.

Just goes to show you that someone can make a profit by selling cd's for cheap. Cd's are usually 18 bucks, plus $3 s/h per cd, but you get 2 CD's free for buying 1. 3 CD's for $27 = $9 per CD. Can't beat that. BMG has been around for at least 10 years. Eat that, recording industry!

I found that BMG had a better selection than CH when I signed up a few months ago.

I love BMG.
The only thing is after your 12, they will keep sending you ads, and you have to remember to send back the little reply card or they will send you the "featured selection" and try and charge you for it if you keep it.
 
Are there any cancellation fees if we cancel after we fulfill our commitments? I wonder how they earn money by selling 12 cds for $50....
 
How easy is it to cancel? Does it work the first time around, or do you have to keep calling in order to cancel?

No cancellation fees. If they are willing to sell CD's for $4 - $5, that tells you something about how much they actually cost. Artist royalties on club CD's are essentially nothing, plus they're cutting out some steps in the distribution chain in selling through CD clubs.

They thrive on people who don't fulfill, quit, repeat. The people who go ahead and buy a few extras at $17.99 plus shipping make them a lot of money.

Many artists have contracts that do not allow the Recording Company to sell the returned and unsold CDs in the Record Clubs. Record Club sales often are not paid to the Artist.
 
okay, I have a new question. will the order go through if the name on the credit card I used isn't the same as my name? it's been two days and the order still says "pending credit card authorization." perhaps this is normal .. ??

It should. I joined BMG when I was around 13 using my dad's credit card, and it worked fine.

 
all right. you sure you aren't named after your dad? 😉 I decided it probably would work since everyone seems to think it's fun to sign up with fake identities.
