Should I settle for X2 3800+ over Opteron 170

I initially started with the idea to buy the Opteron 165, but could not find it. Then I thought of the 170 and now that is either OOS or price jacked.
Should I wait for the Opteron 170 price to settle back down or just go ahead and buy retail X2 3800+ @ $322

The opteron 170 has a 1MB cache where the X2 3800 is only 512MB so there is a small difference. Some claim this doesn't have a big impact but it depends on your application.

lol @ "settle for an x2" :)

to me it sounds like you won't be happy unless you get the opty so i'd just wait. that said, i have two x2 3800's and they are awesome. the extra 512 cache means very little.

I have owned a x2 and unless you are ocing, the chip is not very powerfull. It runs at 2.0ghz. Just to put some perspective on it, my kids 3400+ 754 is faster than my 3800 x2 was.

I went from 3000+ winchester to the 3800 x2 manchester, at stock, and was not impressed. The only differance I noticed was when I encoded my dv to dvd, then it was twice a fast as my 3000+, but game and all around everyday performance was just a tad faster, if any!

Just my opinion, please do not flame!

I wanted the retail so went with chiefvalue for the 170.
Did not know about the combo on BF.

Am now on the lookout for all other accessories for the Opty 170
I've got good tips from ribbon13 on memory, video card and mobo.

If you have a Fry's near you, they have a CPU+Mobo combo on sale tomorrow. $279 for an X2 3800+ with an ECS NF4 board. Best price I've seen on an X2.
