Should I sell my Barton 2500+ and buy a 2500+ Barton Mobile? <EDIT: YEP I did it!!! Overclocking info inside!!>

The title says it all.

Right now my CPU is running at 3200+ speed at 1.70v. I have tested the chip up to 2.34ghz, but I have to run my memory in single channel mode to get up to that speed since the chip is multiplier-locked.

Will I notice a substantial difference with say a mobile barton running at 2500-2600mhz?

Yes if after you sell the Barton 2500+ and get the Mobile the price difference you'll have to pay for the mobile does not exceed $50-60. I'd say if you get up to 2500mhz speed the difference is very noticable, esp for 50-60 it would be a great deal and hold you off upgrading for another 6 months at least on top of whatever time frame you already had in mind.

Well, since I'm in Canada, there is only one place where I can buy one and they want $170CDN for it (~$120US). I could sell my current chip for ~$70US. That would make it a $50 purchase. Not bad I guess, but I was hoping to be able to do it cheaper. Thanks for the input!

given how much it will cost I'd say no. Use this 3200+ now, since it's PERFECTLY fine for now, and just save your cash - get a much better mobile in 6 months.

Why can't you buy from Newegg and pay the duty and tax when it arrives at your home post office? In the US sometimes the post office doesn't even check the package for customs. That is what happens in the USA for cigarettes from Yessmoke.com.

Oops...too late...I just bought one!!

Overclocking results to follow soon. Wish me luck. If I don't hit 2500mhz I will feel pretty st00pid.

WOW!!!!! This chip is INCREDIBLE!!! BEST CPU EVER!!!

I instantly set it up at 12.5X200=2500mhz at 1.75v and it's been priming for 15 mins without issue! Thanks to everyone on these forums who posted about these golden little processors. I'm gonna go sandra bench it right now. :)

OK I tried to run it at 2625mhz (210X12.5) but I couldn't get into windows even at 1.80v. I figure that even if I were to try it at 1.85v, chances are it wouldn't be stable. This way it's running in dual-channel mode also, so we'll see how it goes. :)

Interesting, indeed. I've been following people's overclocking results with the Mobile Athlon XP 2500+ with some interest. I was just wondering if it would be worth it for me. I currently have an Athlon XP 2400+ overclocked to 2.5 Ghz (12.5x200) using 2.15 volts (that's alot, isn't it?) and everything been fine now for 11 months and counting. The extra 256 KB of L2 cache over the XP 2400+ would be worth it just for that, no? Thanks.:)

If you're a gamer, the 512kb of cache would definately help. You would also be able to run at 2.5ghz with much lower voltage. Honestly tho, you would probably only see a ~10% performance boost.

As a side note, according to Sandra, my system is as fast as an Athlon FX 53!! :)

I'm running at 1.80v now as it wasn't stable at 1.75v.

Temps are 39C idle, 52C under full load for 15 mins.

Here are my chip markings:
AXMH2500FQQ4C
Y911505A40268
IQYHA0351MPMW

I just realized the irony in all of this...my "2500+" chip is running at 2500 actual megahertz. Pretty cool I guess.

And to think that all those Intel fanboys insist that the AMD PR system is just a load of hooey.

I'm going to try to run some more benches. My computer feels substantially faster, and I can run UT2003 with higher detail settings than I could before. Awesome...just awesome.

I just did the same thing. The thing that really tempted me to do it is that my XP2500+ could only hit 2.1GHz and the XP2500+ Mobile is only $120 Canadian. I'm running Prime95 tests and seeing how my new mobile will do as we speak.

Congrats! :) I'm enjoying my 2600+ XP-M @ 2.5ghz, 1.65v with a nice low speed Coolermaster fan, and a couple Panaflo L1A's...fast and quiet. :)

No, you wouldn't notice a bit of difference in gaming. The extra L2 cache only makes a difference for encoding video & audio, mostly. Games need processor speed, not cache. With that said, though, at least you would be able to hit 2.5ghz with a sane amount of voltage, which would allow you to get rid of the 5200 BTU air-conditioner!!:D

Looks like most of the the mobile bartons are OC friendly, I have a 2500+ mobile running stable at 2.6 ghz at 1.65 volts!!!!

Mobiles are hand-picked so you know you are getting a chip that can run stock speeds at a lower voltage and can handle higher temps. Those qualities + having an unlocked multiplier = awesome overclocker. You know you've got a good chip when you can do nearly a 1ghz overclock on air (I've seen a few 2400+'s do 2.6-2.7ghz on air)

Hey where did you find Athlon Mobiles for $120 Canadian? I just paid $160 for mine. :(

I am glad you didn't listen to those who told you to not buy it for extra 50. Enjoy.

The mobile chips are great! Mine is currently running 209x12=2508mhz @ 1.7v. As soon as I top it out I will go for fsb!

I want to buy one now. I have a good (not great) desktop 2500+ but I'd like to hit 2.5GHz @ 1.65V... I can only get 2.3GHz at 1.65V now.

Question
I have a barton 2500+ with these steppings.
AXDA2500DKVD4 231499728-05682 AQXEA0331SPMW. This chip is overclocked right now at 220*11 and 1.8vcore I can post at 2600mhz, but can't boot into windows. I believe this is due to the voltage limitations on the motherbaord I have which I am swaping out for a DFI LanParty B. The multiplier is not locked and over all, this chip has been great, however;

My question is this,
would it be worth it to sell this chip and pick up a mobile 2500+? I've heard some folks are getting upwards of 2700-2800mhz out of them on air. On a mobile barton, can the fsb be cranked up like it can on a desktop barton? Is it also 512 cache? My system specs should be in my sig.

I think to get my chip even close to 2700mhz, I would have to crank at least 2.0vcore through it. That alone makes me kind of uncomfortable, but shouldn't be to much of a problem with water cooling, however, I would not like to have to do that and stick with air for a little longer before I invest some money into water cooling

Anyway,
