Should I return this thing (Portable Air Conditioner)?

I received the PAC yesterday. I went with this particular one due to good customer reviews and recommendations from the vendor. It's rated at 12,000 BTU and supposedly can cool a room up to 400sq ft. This thing was $450 out the door. Well I set it all up and let it run for a few hours. Initial temp in the room was 92 degrees. After a few hours it only went down a few degrees to 88, lowest I've seen was 86. This was with doors and windows closed, no lights on, and computer running idle.

For almost half a grand I would expect it to work better than it is right now. I want to return it but sheesh shipping back is $70 and about $67 for restocking fee not to mention the hassle of packing this 90 lb thing back up. Also don't know how to get it to a UPS store cause it wont fit in my car. If this was you would you got through the hassle and loss of money to return it?

Thats a shame, usually those things work well albiet expensive.

I think UPS might be willing to come and pick it up, but they might charge for that, I'm not sure.

How are you venting it outside? My window is a little tall and the vent for my portable has to bend and go up like 3 feet before bending again to blow out the window.

I've never seen the built-in temperature go lower then like 75.

When I would rig it so that it vents almost directly outside, it works a lot better.

First I had it on the ground with the vent hose bending twice to reach the window about 4 ft above the floor. Average temp was 88-89. I then decide to elevate it up to the window height so the vent hose does not have to extend at all. So basically the ac is a little over a foot from the window. That's how I have it right now yet low 80's is the coolest I can get it. The wall unit (20+ yrs old) in the living room blows colder than this thing.

Maybe you got a bunk AC? Did you check for mice possibly popping out of it?

I think portable air conditioners just suck ass. I bought one from fry's as well... it was working... sorta.. but it's past the 1 month mark to return to fry's. I'm stuck with it and it blows.

dude, for a huge room or several rooms, you gotta let that thing run for like a day before it really starts to work properly.

give it some more time and if it still doesn't work, then think about it.

This is my second year with one of those portable air conditioners.
The best I can say about it is that it beats nothing which is what I had before.
