should I return the 7950gt and get the x1950pro instead

I just got it and it is still shrink wrapped. The 7950gt (256). But I keep reading all the threads about terrible image quality and really bad shimmering. I am thinking of just sending the 7950gt back and getting the x1950 instead. Thoughts?

*edit.. I am addending this.. and changing it to the x1950pro. I need to pick up a new psu to run the x19xx series so I cannot afford the x900xt either.

cannot afford the x1950xt. only can afford the x1900xt because of the $15 rebate. otherwise I would be asking about a x1950pro.

*edit.. okay.. can actually only afford a pro for $189. So I guess I am asking about the x1950pro.

If they are pretty close to the same price I would go for the X1900XT. I loved mine and at comparable image quality the ATI card is faster by a decent margin.

Both cards have shimmering. It is painfully noticeable in Neverwinter Nights 2 on my 7900GT.

HOnestly you are better off keeping your current card and not going through all this hassle. If you were buying a new card I would recommend the X1900XT, but if you already have one you may just want to go with the easier path. If it is an EVGA 7950 definitely hold onto it and then step up to the next generation card that fits your budget when the time comes.

I do not experience shimmering with my 7950GT. It's a great performer, and the IQ is good. I don't see why people think G70/71's IQ is so terrible, sure it's not R580 or anything, but it's better than my old X600. Also, I love how easy this thing is to overclock. :) Easily hits GTX clocks (7900GTX, that is). The 7950GT is a great card; don't send it back for something that almost always performs at lower FPS just for IQ. That's pointless. I still wish I could run dual slot cooling, though. No X1950XT for me.... :( *wonder why I ever, ever, bought a Dell prefab. what was I thinking.*

I bought a 7950gt 512, mainly because no one had an x1950xt in stock at the time. I can't complain at all, I run everything at 1680x1050 with max details in FEAR, and still get 40-60fps constantly. Evga just replied to my step up request, and I can get the 8800gts for another $150 if I want. I just wish there were more good looking PC games to play, kinda bored at the moment.

guys I just don't know what to do here.. gotta make a decision... send it back..or keep it. I guess I could setup up in a few months being that it is an evga card, but still... I play wow and I understand the shimmering is horrible in wow... yargh... I wish I had done things differently.

The shimmering is really that bad? Make sure the image settings are on high quality... I do not experience anything like that. The only thing I have seen shimmer is the Chainmail Armor in Oblivion.

I have 2 BFG 512MB GeForce 7950GTs in SLI mode and they rock. I've had no problems with games when set to 'High Quality'. The 3D IQ is almost as good as the X1950 Pro but 2D IQ is definately better on the ATI cards.:)

hmm.. well.. maybe I will just keep it.. sending it back would mean weeks without my new build. That is rough.

Terrible IQ? thats really incorrect. nVIDIA supports some of the best AA. HQ almsot elimates shimmering to a point where its very ahrd to noticeable. (Have you seen shimmering yet?)

I suggest you to keep it. Waste of time and effort.

Whether or not it has better/worse IQ, I don't know, but you're not fooling anyone with the "don't send it back for something that almost always performs at lower FPS just for IQ. That's pointless." statement. IQ > FPS. Otherwise you'd run everything on Low settings, right?

Keep it, install it, enjoy it. The shimmering was blown out of proportion. You will like the card. That's the card I just bought. Although I got an eVGA and I am going to enter the stepup program to a DX10 card.

I would just return the card, get a evga 7600 gt or something, then step up in 3 month for a midrange 8x00..

I just read about the 8800gts. I could step up in march.. then I would have the best IQ and the best card. I am so going that route.
