Should I return my new iPad Air 2 in favour of the iPad Pro?

It's a refurbished 128GB (non-cellular) model that I bought recently. Liking it a lot but am left wondering what the Pro would be like for content consumption with its bigger display, better stereo speakers and faster performance.

I can get student discount on iPads through the Apple Education store. It's not as much as refurbished (typically ~4.5%) but every little helps.

I have absolutely no interest in the keyboard or stylus accessories. Just the potential as an even greater content consumption device vs the Air 2.

I have up until tomorrow to return my Air 2, so time's running out. What should I do? UK prices haven't been announced for the Pro yet so it's making it a very hard decision.

Although the UK prices haven't been announced, it looks like the UK price + VAT is pretty close to the US price, at least on other devices (I looked at the Air 2 and MacBook, I did not compare their entire catalog, I am sure there are outliers).

When you say content consumption, what do you mean exactly? Primarily movies and music?

Personally, I'd keep the Air 2. Not sure why you would want to spend that much extra money for what amounts to a larger screen. Yeah, the CPU is faster but will that even matter for your stated purposes? IMO, the speakers are pretty irrelevant as you should wear a good set of headphones when you're watching movies or listening to music on an iPad. :)

Honestly I hit the 2GB ram limit all the time web browsing. 4GB would be awesome. I would look at one myself to make sure it isn't too big. But if its not and you can afford it go for it.

iPad Pro seems like overkill. And I have a Surface Pro 3 and I found that a screen almost 13 inches in size is just too awkward to really use heavily as a tablet. For me at least.

But speaking of the Surface. Maybe the Surface 3 is worth a look if you want something a bit beefier than an iPad. For $600 (sometimes a little less) you can get the Surface 3 with 4GB RAM, 128GB storage, 10.5 inch screen, micro SD card slot, full sized USB port, front facing speakers, kick stand. It's very nice hardware.

The cons for the Surface 3 is the local storage is kinda slow, apps are slow to install and load. Though it runs great once loaded.

Also the Windows app situation is still pretty disappointing. But being able to run Windows x86 programs kinda offsets that con.

Oh no, I mean I already have a productivity machine in the form of my gaming laptop. Plenty of power, but a bit hefty to stay on the lap all the time as it needs a cooling pad. That's why I wanted to invest in a tablet. For comfortable web browsing/media consumption in bed. Air 2 does that well but I'm wondering if Pro will fit that niche better.

- Big screen for movies and video.

- Amazing stereo audio.

- The A9X would hopefully resolve the performance hiccups I see occasionally in iOS 9 animations (but seeing as the resolution is much greater will the GPU performance mostly balance out?)

Is that worth the £300ish premium.

Such a shame I can't hold it in my hands and see it for myself before I must decide. If I don't inform Apple of my wish to return tomorrow I will be stuck with the Air 2 forever. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Air 2.

Not for music (I have a Bluetooth speaker for that) but it'd certainly help whilst watching movies and videos.

True. I doubt it would be music worthy but one can hope. I personally watch a lot of videos on my tablets (have many) but I think the Pro would be too big to view at close differences. Still interested in the quality of it tho.

Well I've just spoken to my brother who was the one who insisted I get an iPad instead of an Android tablet and even he thought it wasn't worth the extra money and I should wait until I have more money to spare if I want to get the Pro in future.

I should probably listen to him and everyone else who's advised that here in this thread. Just have to get through tomorrow and I won't be tempted anymore as the 14 day return window will have expired.

One more day of torture...

I know what will make you feel better:

V1 Apple products usually should not be bought. There is always some flaw that cannot be fixed without a design change or some new technology breakthrough. The iPad Pro is a V1 product.

Your iPad Air 2 is a late gen Apple product. Hell it is V2 of the Air series alone. That makes it a much safer bet.

Yeah, I recall reading about build quality issues the Air 2 had at launch with some units suffering from screen distortion when held in one hand. Mine thankfully doesn't have that problem, probably because it's not one of the first batch of production.

There doesn't seem to be any hardware issues with my Air 2 *knock on wood* so I guess it'd be a risk to go for the first batch of production with the Pro.

Must resist temptation tomorrow. Must remain strong and not cave in.
